Default Rainbow Dash (Y-town 2.2S)

I was "fortune" to test Zarizis and Arttus crawler last summer.

Hmm... should i build 2.2S??? Maybe even mod???
And then the sh*t hit the fan... I heard that there was 2 good crawlers 4 sale.
I didn't have any choise... Fire in my mind was 2 strong i couldn't say no.

I like the Crawler Conceptz skins alot!
Hopefully i have money before worlds.
So i can order new skins from Crawler conceptz
Rainbows dash is not dragon!

Down hilling i have to train more. little bit tricky with this car.
And that's not the only thing to train

I was very happy for my standing in nordics -16
6th with this training amount

Last weekend was finnish series comp 2/6 2016
I was 4th in that comp. Only 2pts away from 3rd place

Here is video from the comp. I think it was course 3/4.

Time to update this thread.
I have been training every week 1-3 times and it's starting to show.
I can drive lines that was impossible for me at the start of summer.

I had time to go two comps also
First comp was Finnish Rc Crawling Series -16 #3 Jämsä

1st place in there!! Ok Only 3 drivers on the comp and all the best drivers away. Holiday season.
Fun day still. Good courses and tricky terrain. Sometimes it was like driving on the ice.
Sand made the rocks very slippery. My slick voodoo tires in the 2.2M didn't work at all!!

second comp was Rfot Crawl Cup -16 #4 Pirkkala

Day started little odd... Our comp place was taken by trick bicycle comp.
We had to get new spot for the comp. Luckly Rfot(Sarka) ppl had other place.
After the first shock it was good day. Very hard terrain to master. Forrest rocks.
Hard to flip car around. Fun day overall.
3rd place in that comp.

Next comp next weekend! Finnish Rc Series #4/5 in Naantali.
Can't wait to get there. I have seen pictures from the comp place
and it looks amazing. Mr.Dravtech is coming there to comp also

Little update coming to the rig.
New body cutted. New body Parma Xciter body like the old ones.

I could have painted it my self but...

When u look at this and then u look at your self painted drifter...

U know it's not enough! So new body cut and send away for better hands
Rainbow dash theme coming <3

It's time to update this thread again.
Lot have happened after last update.
Let's start from the last Finnish National series comp #Rauma 5/5 2016

Huh difficult day it was. It started raining and the rocks where slippery as hell

Not so good day for me. Some gates turned out impossiple to drive and allready i had points full :(
Overall feeling good. Difficult gates and stupid drive lines.
But i have to test and learn

Darra news reporter Arttu filming some shitty footage to our show

4th place at the comp.

That secured my 2nd place on Finnish national series overall!
Not bad first year

And ofcourse this is not the end for this year... Let's continue in new post.
Of course this would crash if long post

After the Rauma finnish nationals we had something special
We organized 2 events on same weekend.
Rented cabin for our use nearby the comp place. It was nice place 8 people fitted nicely in there
Saturday we had Hangover gatepuzzle
Scale event with 2 courses. About 200 gates to drive and no winners

It was relaxing to go just drive and no worries about the clock on course.
After driving to the cabin and sauna and hot tub. Maybe couple beers

On sunday we had historical event.
The last RFOT's Crawl Cup event in history!
Nice comps good memories. This is not the end.
Start for something new
4th place again.

I live near this place. 30min drive. It is nice place to train and comp.

My friend drived with my cars that day.
I'm trying to lure him in the crawling

I think the seed has been planted
Now it's good to start prepairing for the worlds.
Comp season is over in Finland. Winter is coming!!!

Time for little maintaince for the car before France worlds
Car has been working whole season. Couple drive shafts and nothing else broken! I think it has been tested to it's limits. I think samu can say the same. He has seen mee "driving"
So car to the tabble and let's have a look.

Filled the shocks with 50th oil front and rear.
Opened the difd covers and everything was ok there.
Then i took the gearbox off...

1 Bearing has something lost?!?
Opposite side bearing loose.
Ofcourse no shop in Finland got them!!
Lucky Arto (R2) had couple extra in his shelf and he send me

Gearbox back in order. I have to say this Hulksta gearbox is good!
No wearing on the gears or the carbon. Somekind of cover would be nice.

Couple weeks before France painter started making me new body.
I was getting little scared could he make it in time

It was about week before leaving to worlds when i got the next images...

It was friday when postman delivered the box from Totte.
It had 2 bodies in it. One for my team mate Arttu and one for me.

Now i can call it official Rainbow Dash!!
I wanted new shock spring covers to match the body.
So quick measurements and sitting in front of the screen.
Made my first 3d model. Need to make adjustments to it.

I Made little tuning in the rear. I have been thinking the rear is too stiff.
Wanted little more twist to it.
Moved the rear upper links one hole nearer to each other.

Had to curve the axle little bit to get the nut to fit.

Now i like how the rear travels. We will see how this setup works in France.

France worlds over. Huh what an event! Big thanks to organizers.
U guys made amazing work
Beer, pizza & food service on the beach
Short walk to comp site from the comp village. Under 10min
Restaurant dinner in the evening was nice. Good food and good company.
Comp village offered brilliant place for meeting other ppl in crawling.
Weather was wat it was...
Weather on friday (1.9 / Super)
Weather on saturday (2.2M)
Weather on sunday (2.2M Finals / 2.2S)
That don't matter. So much fun!!!

Drizzt Do'Urden & Rainbow Dash first time on the comp site.

It was so different to drive in those rocks. The rock has so much traction in it. Finland we have this slippery rocks only. It was so fun driving in there.
Changing the rear links place made big difference. Now it moves much better for my liking. Not what i want but closer.

Here is couple pics more. No pics from the comp... LAZY

And where did i find my self on the score board?

9th out of 54 drivers!
I had good feeling hole day and the car worked perfectly
Here is 1 video from the comp

Good ending for my first year in crawling.
Winter is coming in Finland so no more driving.

Now it's good time to hide in the garage

Default Re: Rainbow Dash (Y-town 2.2S)

It was time to say good bye to narrowed AR60 in the front.
In rear i will keep the narrowed Ar60 with Xr lockouts.

Short side was normal lenght. Long side was narrowed about 2cm.

With narrowed axle i didn't get enough steering for my liking.
And there was no room for more steering angle.
So now testing full widht AR60 in the front.

So it was time to take new and some used parts to the table.

I think this was supposed to go here and hold the servo stand...?

It was 2 small i think... I couldn't trust it would hold in my beating.
So little bit longer worm and we are good to go

Now i can trust that it will hold.

So here we have the trust installed on the axle. LOOKING GOOD!

Time for little Beefing

In the narrowed version i didn't have tubes inside...
Ok 2cm piece in the narrowed part to get them hold together.
These tubes are from asiatees. Ok quality and prize. 14€ for axle.
Ofcourse the metal is not the same level as the Original Beeftubes.
I have 2 set's of them in the shelf. I don't want to use them to this project
Because...

I'm going to machine them open from upper part.

Old axle had original plastic link/shock mounts.
Now testing VP versions that i had in my wraith.

Starting to look like winner axle
I like how the servo is sitting low.

"New" locker. This is used in my wraith for over 1 year in brutal use.
Still zero sloppy.

Old one is VP aluminium locker... No set screws so they were sloppy.

So it was time to but them in scale... Steel vs Aluminium!

Steel won! Ok it's machined much smaller. Aluminium locker that size would brake very easily. I think with set screws the aluminium version would weight 19g. Not big difference in weight.

So it was time to attach gear to the locker.
This is old OD gear from the narrowed axle. I can't see any wearing.
I don't know how old this is. I have driven 1 year and don't know how long Manu used it before that.

So it was time to take the shafts to some tweaking to get more steering angle.

It was time look at the weights in the front.
VP versions weights.

Old axles had 240g of weight.
Now i think i don't need so much becouse the tubes in axle.
So little sawing and we are good to go.

Now i have 100g weight per side.
These weight's are machined nicely.

They don't fit to my knucles so... Little twaeking is needed for these to fit.

I got these little bad boys from the Nordics -16 sponsor gift suffle.
Time to take them to action. Old axle had BTA so there was only 1 in the front. Now i need them both side becouse the steering rod comes in front.

Axle "installed"
I need new titanium upper links. First some testing to get the lengt.

Old links are about 1,5-2cm short.

Need to change the electronic plate mount place.
So the servo sit's little lover and ofcourse the electronics.

Got my self 3d printer

Now i think i have more motivation to train how to make 3d models
I don't have to wait that my friend has time to make the print.

First part for my safty. Rear weight holder.
This is only prototype made from PLA.
I think i will make the final version from BLA and if i can get Nintek Armadillo then make them from that.
Armadillo Shore Hardness = 75D
Abrasion resistance 84% better than PLA and 60% better than ABS
https://ninjatek.com/products/filaments/armadillo/

Fitted nicely for these wheels.

They are little bit out from the wheel. That don't matter becouse i have to make the rear little narrower so then they will go inside of the wheel.

This is all for now... more in the near future

Damn whole crawling season 2017 is over and i haven't updated my build threads.
Ok i have been busy studying video editing and other stuff...
Now i have time so let's continue where we left the story.
-----------------------------------------------------------

Let's continue where we left in the winter...

When i ordered Front servo & link thrust also ordered rear link trust.
Then i realized it won't work with my narrowed Ar60 axle.
Center point is different in narrowed ar60 than normal widht.

there is small aluminum tube inside where the screw go.
This can take some serious beating. 20ft drops and so on...

So old trusty y-town rear trust. I think it's made by y-town?
Somebody wiser can tell.

I think it's missing something? Is it trying to learn to fly or something?
Who knows...

What do u got there?

3mm Titanium rods i see
Time to make some upper links.

precise measurements and let's cut.

Links ready. Here is tools that i used + WD40 for lubrication
Tools were ok for this job. Not the hardest grade titanium.

I like how full widht axle turns much more than narrowed did.
Here is good spot to stop writing. 2nd time doing this write up.
1st time pushed back button... I had written much more than this

That is indeed an original Y-town rear plate, with an old Rowdy truss for narrowed AR60's.

It some cheap titanium from ebay. I don't know the grade.
I would not make any longer links from it.
They will bend easily. Ok u need 10-15ft drop to get them bend.
That's not good enough for me.
For next year i will order better grade titanium.

3mm is not going to last long but the 4mm with some revo rod ends will hold on pretty good, especially if you use a torch to bend it. I have found out that bending it like that it kind of locks the bend in, plus you can make tighter bends with minimal risk of braking.

Links ready so it was time to tinker with the propeller shafts.

U can see that i had some problem with the drive shaft.
Axial WB8 HD shaft is hitting the link in the rear. Not good at all
Also in the front it gets bended easily. even with the glued aluminum tube inside.

It was time to make order from SDI

S.D.I PROPELLER SHAFT (5mm to 5mm)
--Link to S.D.I page--

Very good shafts i can say. My team mate has been running them 2-3years without any breakage. I drived this season without any problems.

Also they are lighter and smaller than old Wb8 Hd

They were very easy to shorten to right lenght.

They come with short set screw that i changed.
Axial diff outputs have holes so i had laying around these longer screws.(Don't know what they are called)
Had to cut them to fit.

Now the upper links have space between the shafts

I had to place some spacer so that the bearing would not pop out.

--Another link to S.D.I Propeller safts that i used in this project---

If u missed the first one

Let's continue the story some other day.
Family chores are calling

It was time to go to the drawing board.
It was time to make some rear weight hangers.
So that this pony don't fly away!

Ordered some weight from Dravtech
-Link to Dravtech weights--
Tungsten cylinders that have the same dimensions as the Pinewood Derby 0.5 oz slugs.

Few measurements and this is what i got out from my head...

On the right side is the first version that i tested fitness inside the wheel and so that the weights fit. On the left side is the "Final" piece.

Changed the rear shock/link mounts also to VP versions.

I like the look of them alot and they can take some beating.
My Wraith have them also and zero issues.
There was other versions that i wanted but nobody produced them at that time.

Next i took out the gearbox and motor.
Time to check that everything is ok with them.

Of course i had to place them on the scale

I like the Hulksta engineerin gearbox.
Zero issues with it. I think i have driven over 200 packs now with it.
It works with XR10 gears that are not so easy to find anymore
Go check his facebook page. He has some interesting stuff there
--Link to Hulksta Facebook page---

And for the motor part. Team Brood Sisu motor.
I don't know the turn count. I have to check from the shaft next winter when i do the maintenance to it. 35t i would guess
If u don't know what Sisu means here is translate from Finnish to English
"Determination regardless of cost" And this motor has it!

So it was time to start building the electronics for the summer.

CC Micro Sidewinder

Of course i CC Bec 10a. Capacitor removed if u think it looks odd.

Little bit of soldering and we are good to go waterproofing the backet.

I'm using Rubbercomp to shield my electronics from water.
Zero failures with this goo. Only thing i regret is that i didn't take transparent version. When this can is over next will be transparent. Easier to see what lights are blinking

This is how it looks after drying.

I have this expensive waterproof sanwa receiver...
Of course i have to dissamble it so i can get the extra grams out of the weight

Ok to be honest i did it because of this.

Now it won't hit my body anymore in full squat.

I had to make new battery mount.
Little bit of cardboard and aluminum sheet.

Here we have the finished product.
I would liked to paint it. I didn't have time

It was time to tinker with the servo arm.
It was little tricky to get it so low that it would turn the wheels enough.
I managed to do that with little grinding and we are good to go.

Here is picture from the upper link setup that i'm running.

Front

Rear

I think the car is ready for the first run

RTR weight.
4,045lb (64,73Oz)

Short test in my home course... S*itty course if u ask me.
I throw old bricks on the ground when i was renovating my house.

Everything worked so it was time to go first time to go first training session of the year...
