| Finding one or building one?
I'm in search of an AX10 Scorpion but the only ones I can find are charging ridiculous amounts of money, which I don't understand. So my question is, should I just shell out the $$, or spend my time buying the parts to build my own AX10 Scorpion? Thanks. JB |

Just buy the axle housings and start from there. I've had about 6 different versions of an AX-10 and never bought one complete. |

In stock form they're pretty much crap so I'd start with axles and whichever aftermarket chassis strikes your fancy. The stock chassis can be used to some extent if you use an scx skid plate rather than the ax10 version.

What's a "ridiculous" amount of money? (Depends on parts, chassis, wheels, tires, tranny, etc) Building one, with correct parts (for comp), from scratch, is cheaper.. cheaper then buying one and rebuilding it.. It's actually cheaper, to buy one, that's already built.. Cause I probably spend 1,500$ to build one, for comp, correctly.. Buying one, that's built, for 6-800$, is cheaper.. You can't build a competitive rig, for that money.. But.. I always suggest and do this myself.. if I buy a built rig. I tear it apart, clean, grease, rebuild it, anyways.. If it's just for fun and mainly for the building part, build it.. | |

Define ridiculous amounts of money. Sometimes you can catch some good deals in the For sale. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/sale/...afty-2-2s.html Like Winner said, from scratch youll spend the least and get to cherry pick the parts you want. But what are you looking to do with it? |

Thanks for the great replies. First, this crawler would be simply just a hobby crawler. No comps. I owned an AX10 Scorpion a couple years ago and had to sell due to needing $$. So now again, I'm on the hunt for one. Ridiculously high pricing for a stock AX10 Scorpion was the price of $450 from some guy on Craigslist. I find that to be high. I don't mind starting from scratch, I just don't know how well I would do building ground up but I could definitely try. |

450$ is a good price ..... if its a good truck. Craiglist is freeky lol. Maybe post the info here and get opinions from an actual crawl community? Im not trying to push chicklets rig but 500$ is about average for a real rig already built. I was adding numbers in my head last night and I come out costing more to build something capable, durable and still budget friendly. Stock axles - 100$ set after shipping or with free shipping figure Aftermarket chassis - lowest price around is ours at 60$ Then you still need a front axle plate - ours for 30$ Add in lockers at 20$ each your up to 230$ Then add in suspension links and steering links and youre at 324$ Tires plus plastic wheels from CI for a friendly budget, another 84$ And thats not adding in the front axle tubes and Vp parts if you want to do the XR conversion for better steering. Not trying to discourage at all but 450-500 range is average for a 'well' built sporty truck. Just food for thought though, post up whats listed on the craigslist add. Maybe you could score and it be an overly built rig for a cheap price. |

Being vigilant on the classified section is where you will find a deal. I almost bought these just because of the price of $625 for BOTH: http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/sale/...orty-sold.html Even scale trucks use comp crawler parts. Heck, without us OG comp crawlers, this hobby would not have progressed to where it is now. Education is the real key. Read the build threads from vetted individuals on this forum so you know what performs well and which parts work together. That knowledge will also help you recognize a great deal when posted. You're already on the right track though. Keep posting and reading the forum. Buy a used crawler as complete as possible to get you started and build it up as you break parts. Often times it is the simplest builds that turn out to be the most fun and memorable. |
