Now things got interesting. Mocked up the suspension and tried to install the transmission. The pan in the Hustler has no mounting holes for the AX-10 transmission. There are holes for a Pede and a R2. The way the pan is cut there are no holes that will line up with the tranny.

To be able to mount the AX-10 tranny I will need to use the AX-10 skid plate. The Hustler frame is narrower than the Scorpion. The Skid will need to be narrowed. Then bolt the tranny to the skid and then bolt the skid into the Hustler. Here is a picture of the Huslter that was used in the give away contest ad. You will also notice that the front of the chassis is sitting on the servo. Infact the servo is holding the chassis up a little. I will show the fix latter. Here are pic's of what is needed to make the AX-10 tranny fit. Last edited by Neil E; 11-02-2007 at 12:03 AM. |

Looking good. It's got allot of simularities to the Axial based Hustler I'm building right now. Have you decided on a powerplant yet? |

After mounting the axles and links the lower links need to be shortend. Rather than buying links, I cut the links to the desired lengths. Squared the cut ends with a file. The links are hollow. The hole is the right size to tap 3m. no need to drill. With the front axle in palce the servo is hitting the frame. This is a problem. To get the clearence needed for the servo I tweeked the frame. I sanded some of the welds. I also did some blending of the pan to the frame (this is not needed, I just wanted it to look pretty). Then bead blasted the frame and put a couple of coats of silver Krylon on it. I forgot to take pictures of the drive assembly installed. So here is a pic of the amssembled Hustler by RCP. Then a pic of the stock chassis and then the tweeked frame painted. Last edited by Neil E; 11-02-2007 at 12:07 AM. |

After sitting an looking for a long time at the tranny in the frame, I have decided to install a R2 disconnect. Always wanted one and had plans on installing it after the build was completed. I just do not want to start drilling extra holes in the pan. Here is what I am going to install and the power plant to run it. |

I thought this contest was for a new chassis all ready for the stock axial bits. Still looks good. |

Nice Build. Good pics too! It will take a little work to get the R2D in there. You will need to cut off the clear cover at the bottom. You can also replace the screws on the bottom front side of the tranny with regular button head screws. They have a smaller button on them than the RC4WD one's and will allow a little more clearence. I used Harley's method for servo placement. It was a pain to get in, but it works and fits great. You may also want to get a thin sheet of Delrin for a skid plate. It helps the tube chassis slide over the rocks a little better. |

Did not work today, so spent the afternoon working on the Hustler. Got the R2D installed. Ground the bottom of the plastic cover to fit. Counter sunk the holes to use flat head screw, Also needed to grind a little area to clear the lower link on that side. As suggested I will probably make a plastic skid plate for it. |

I assembled the drive shafts using Traxxas Long Truck ½ shaft pro pack LXJH85 and Traxxas hardened steel output yokes 4628X. The Traxxas yokes will fit in the stock AX-10 half shafts. The reason I used the Traxxas was, I needed a shorter shaft for the front. From past experiance the hardened steel Traxxas yokes are a must.

Did the final assembly. Mounted the ESC on the rear 4 link plate with velcro. Used a Spektrum RX and mounted it in the plastic cover of the R2D with velcro. I will be using a Spektrum DX3 to control the Hustler. Set up the 3rd channel to select the DIG. All went together well. I next put graphics on the panels rather than paint. Wanted to be different. I have not recieved the battery pack for the build. It should arrive next week. As soon as it does, I will install it and take the final pictures. I will get out the good camera and take real nice photos. |

Still waiting on my batteries. So I thought you might like to see what wheels and tires I am planning on using. I will probably play with the stock wheels and tires, but really want to try these Beadlock Wheels 2.2 (12mm) Super Narrow (BL01N) From RC4WD New Imex 2.2" Rubicon Crawler Tires Very soft and sticky |
