New AX-10...

Just got my first crawler, been wanting one for a long time, finally threw down the money to get one. Decided I needed to get something to play with while my 1:1 is torn apart (going on a year now, with many more months to go).

The specs and some pics:

Integy 55t motor
Novak Rooster 12t ESC
Hitec 965 servo

I played with it whole 5 minutes in the house before the front driveshaft yoke split, it hasn't even been outside yet. :-(

I don't like how high it sits, so I think I am going to experiment with a droop setup once I repair the driveshaft, I would like to get the links parallel with the ground.

Only people that have driveline issues are those that run them at the stock/jacked up height. Suck that suspension down. Stick fuel tubbing on the inside of the shocks to get it lower and still some on the outside part too. Run 80-100wt oil and retry. Once you get it lower, that driveline issue will go away.

Yup, that's why I am planning on lowering it...

Something has to give at some point, I would rather pop a shaft than a diff."thumbsup" They do pop off too easy, but they should not be unbreakable.

hlb3 12-06-2007 10:18 PM

Yeah, I do want to keep the shaft the weak link, just not quite as weak. :-P I'll throw a zip tie on or glue on one of the shock spacers to take care of that.

I did some messing around with it today, pulled off the springs, found a couple long springs from some pens I had laying around and put them inside on the shafts, even with the 30wt oil, it is SOOOOO much better than before, almost all of the torque twist is gone and it seems a lot more stable (I can only test so much with rear wheel drive in the house though). It is a little lower than I would like, it needs to be about 3/8" higher than it is now, but this is mostly just a test, I will probably be switching to a different shock (those Integy shocks look very nice). Im sick of hearing the "weak link" justification. its just common sense to build up known failure points on a rig. Fix the damn drive shaft issue and then see what the next issue is. i would rather swap an axle once a year than a shaft every week. seriously, come on. that is ridiculous:twisted:

Then put the revo shafts on it and everyone can quit bickering. Then you will be replacing pinions when it binds up.

They are called "fusible links" for a reason. Automobile manufactures have used them for years, this way they don't have the whole car melt down to find out something else is the next issue.

axle a year? hell, if you made the friggin' driveline unbreakable, you would then be worrying about tranny gears and ring/pinion gears every time you bound it up. I would much rather spend a couple bucks and fix the driveline once or twice a month than spend a couple bucks (or more) and much much much more time fixing a diff or your tranny. makes way more since to me to fix a part that take all of two minutes to replace.

No one makes an indestructible rig.

No one makes a perfect rig (but this one is close imo"thumbsup")

mysharona 12-07-2007 05:30 PM

^^^i drive my truck alot, but it really doesnt go through shafts once or twice a month, once every two months maybe^^^:-P

Got my new driveshaft and took it over to my buddy's house and played around with it for a while. It performed really well, although it would be much nicer if it was about 3/8"-1/2" higher (which is where I was wanting it anyways) since it would occasionally get hung up, I also need to get some weights on the wheels/axles. I figured it was time for an update. I have added a dig setup, Losi Rock Claws, TCS bent links, Integy shocks, some Slick Sleeves, a skid plate, and I have a 7-cell split pack to mount on the front axle on order.

Some pics:

The dig setup, more info here: http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/axial-ax-10-scorpion/97904-just-finshed-my-dig-setup.html

A lame little video testing the dig:

The Slick Sleeves on the steering and links:

New shocks on, 2.5" belly height, up .5" from the droop setup with stock shocks, right where I want it to be.

Built a tray on the upper link to hold the ESC, once I get my new battery pack, I will be doing something similar on the rear for the RX I think so I can lose the top tray.

Skid plate. I was tired of getting hung up, having rocks scrap on the front of the motor and getting grass and leaves in the spur gear, hopefully this will help that. I haven't had a chance to test it yet. I may be remaking it in plastic if I can find some.

That's it for now...

hlb3 01-05-2008 05:01 PM

Got my 7-cell pack from cheapbatterypacks.com and got it mounted on the axle. All I have to say is WOW, I can't believe how much more power it has with that extra cell.
