Default Blewd up the locker

I know I saw a post in here a little while ago about a feller who stripped out his locker, but I think his pictures were blurry so here's a couple of quick pictures. It was very cold outside at our most recent competition (cough that I won cough ) and on the third course the front right wheel stopped doing the 4WD thing.

Before the comp I noticed there was some play in the drivetrain, but after these things break in a little bit, they all seem to have some slop, so I didn't really think much of it. Be it a Clod, or TLT, or Hi Lift, or whatever.

I have the metal Axial yokes with #1951 Pede shafts. They have one other comp on them and haven't popped off yet.

Weeeeeee!!

Cool how you can leave the knuckle on the axle C and a few screws later you're inside the housing.

Kinda rounded out...

Someone asked me a great question. If the truck is all locked up, why not have the axle solid all the way across? Great idea I thought.

So maybe a new product coming out? It would reduce a lot of slop.

It's quite possible to do that, allthough I would rather have 2 shafts.

You'd need a section in the middle of the shaft that will fit with a provision in the center of a ring gear. Gotta transfer the power somehow. The center section of the shaft would have to be HUGE.

Don't know if my lockers in the 2.2 will bust or not. Holding up fine so far. If they do,I got a small chunk of stainless at work in my top toolbox just for that

Seems like they might, but I personally couldn't tell you.

It'd be tough to get the dogbone all the way through everything to the other side. Maybe if the axle had a locker built in, then put the pin through it and maybe everything else would fit past the dogbones. Not sure really, but the idea is there.

Well, I'll term this thing as a wear item, like the rest of the truck is really, and I ordered a few at once so if I feel it's going to be about that time, I'll just do the preventative maintenance thing. Maybe the RC4WD locker?

That's pretty much what I was thinking. I think. The huge provision part anyways.

The aluminum with hardened steel pressing against it will always be a wear point. I was thinking of using locktight to reduce the rub, but then I wouldn't be able to replace the shafts easily. Mine are getting sloppy too.

mine are pretty sloppy also. I was thing about adding some JB weld to the end of the shaft to make it fit tighter> NOT JB welding it to the locker. just thickening up the shaft.

I had a lot of slop. A few lugs worth of rotation, not a couple, a few.

Make the locker out of steel, but then either the pin or plastic diff cups let go. So make those out of steel. But then the ring or pinion gear lets go, but there's HD versions of those too... on and on we go. It's a conundrum. If the axles are bulletproof, I would have popped a shaft, and only had two wheel drive. I made it past another gate with three wheel drive. Eh who knows. I bought two more stock lockers.

Store bought, more or less entirely! But you know what? It works very well.

If you beefed it up enough to work forever, you would probably get a bigger motor and destroy it because you knew it could handle more power,

Endless cycle of these things. Makes the fact you pulled as much weight with yours just that much more impressive. Guess an even load (sort of) on all four tires might help. Distributes the load over four points, compared to just the one.

Magic.

Propped up the one side of the axle and focused the camera and gave the tire a spin then snapped the shot .

This is what I did. They could have been closer to the outside edge (did it closer on the rear locker). Takes a little more time building the axle. But I haven't had a problem yet. Has 2 set screws on opposite side also. 4 total for each locker.
