I got my deadbolt a few weeks ago as my first crawler type rc. So far it is has been great, I have always hated how comp crawlers look, and hated how scale crawlers left so much to be desired in regards to performance. The deadbolt is a nice balance between the two styles. It looks nice, and after a few upgrades can perform very, very well on the rocks.

Also the tower super saver club is worth it. I got my deadbolt from them for 279.99 shipped, ($50 off $300 or more coupon).

if you want to go pure scaler it wouldnt be the best truck to get, but for a good mix of scaley looks and performance you can't beat it stock for stock.

I have found it to be my new favorite rig. And I have many to choose from. I have only performed minor stage one mods, per Bender. And I am loving it. I had it up in the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee over the weekend climbing some serious hills, and it was cold and rainy out so it was slick. I had my Summit out as well and the AX-10 with minor mods gave it a run for its money on the climbs. I hope to have some of the vidz up on my YouTube channel within the next week.

Bottom line: If anyone even thinks they might want to give this rig a try, then go for it!

If your looking for a capable crawler get a AX10 Deadbolt/Ridgecrest, if you want a awesome scale crawler get a SCX10, or get both LOL. I highly recommend both.

I just built one for my wife! All I did was unglue the front tires so I could put some weights on the front wheels, then re-glued! Cost $2.00
Next change the battery tray to front for better weight bias, and install esc/rx box at rear! Big help! Cost Free
I would buy a better steering setup because the stock plastic is all flex. I did the STRC one and it works very well. Cost $11.00

So for less than $15.00 and some wrench time making some small changes, and you will have a great scaler/crawler. Not a perfect scaler, not a perfect crawler, but it does a little of both very good!

If I where you I would go with the new g6 kit they came out with, there are a few bonus upgrades in the kit like aluminum shocks, r35 compound tiress, metal links (which I recommend you go to Vanquish for much better links!!) but think about this the scx10 is a very great chassis to start with. But don't get me wrong here, I have a comp. ready ridgecrest and its a very good crawler, but again I set it up as a crawler, right out of the box it would suck on the rocks (which besides the tires and body there are no difference between the ridgecrest and deadbolt). And another thing the new 2.2 maxxis look to be great tires on the rtr... well there not really, from my understanding axial only uses r35 in kits, yes they may advertise as R35's but trust me there not, it was the same thing about the old 2.2 ripsaws once they get dirty they have little to no traction. If you want a great crawler you can start with the ridgecrest or deadbolt but again there not as great as super class crawlers for thousand but NO you don't need a thousand dollar rig for simple use. The upgrades you will need to do right out of the box are like:
- New steering servo (at least 350 oz. I use savox but they have many other brands to choose from)
- Steering link= stock steering is way to bendy for a crawler
- Motor= depending on your application a 45t or 55t will be a great benefit
- Front wheels weighted down= you WILL need a new servo but 3.5 oz. or more is great in each wheel.
- C-hubs, lockouts, knuckles= yes its worth to change to V.P. on this, I broke 3 stock plastic c-hubs on my wraith!!
- Move that battery to the front= just get a servo extension and move the relocation up front
- B.E.C.= if you get a new servo then you'll probably need a BEC to get full power from the servo, go with a Castle 10 amp BEC. (Needed for servos that are 200 oz.'s or more).

As you see upgrades go on and on but I just wanted to help you out with this, hope this helped - axial 4x4 crawler

I've got the ridgecrest, deadbolts ugly brother, and i love it. Not so much a scaler the vertical plate chassis kinda ruins that, but a sweet crawler all the same

The crest/ deadbolt will out crawl an scx10 out of the box anyday. I started with a riddge/deadbolt and had a blast doing the stage 1,2 and 3 upgrades which was a great learning process. I even did some sportsman class comps with it. It was a bit wide for comp gates but I got me into the local comps. I then, I played around painting bodies, then converted it to a wroncho. A great platform for doing everything well and modable to suit your current need. Go for it.
