Default Johnny builds a Capra because why not?

I had no intentions of getting another tube rig.

The Wraith got me back into this hobby. I've got a Bomber and it's a lot of fun. Ultimately I prefer rigs that you'd be more likely to see running around on the streets and weekend trailing. I was tempted by the 1.9 Wraith, but I'm a kit guy.

Then came the Capra. I dunno. Something about the sum of the things I don't really care for (tube chassis, portals, servo on axle) just kind of work here. And it's got a dig. That seems like it could be fun. Do I really need a 1.9 performance machine?

My Big Little Guy said he "might" help me build it.

Fine.

I'm just getting into crawlers (have several off-road race vehicles, plus a few bashers that I'm "converting" into other things), and decided on the Capra as my first. The build is easy (despite the errors in the manual...and, there are several, although Axial is fixing it). When you get ready to start building, be sure to download the latest version of the manual...the first updated version was released a few days ago, and the next updated version should be downloadable within a week.

Much to my surprise, Big Little Guy actually wanted to help build this! First up, the axles. They went together easily. Nice fit and finish. Plastics feel good. I like 'em.

Big Little Guy was still helping out. Shock build went easy enough. The bleed screws are a nice touch. Let's see if they hold oil.

These went on fine, but I still hate E-clips...

After this I had a rainy, windy day off. I had a little solo build time.

Got the Holmes Hobbies servo and Vanquish horn in place...

The links are nice and beefy and the rod ends are a better plastic with very little play. Both are nice improvements. The hole in the links I could do without. I get why they did it (especially combined with the turnbuckle-stlye threading), but I'm skeptical it will be useful in practice.

The transmission went together pretty smoothly thanks to all the tips and quirks people posted about the manual. Thanks for that!

I went with a Holmes Hobbies Stubby Puller Pro 2200KV brushless motor. I had this for another build, but I think it will do well here. I got that little Spektrum servo in there for the dig. Let's see how it holds up.

Cage. As others have noted, it's quite solid when bolted together.

Got the interior all painted up...

Also, I had to solder up an extension for the battery connector since the Mamba X wires didn't reach into the battery area when mounted on that back "firewall" piece.

Ok, gotta admit...that is the MOST detailed Capra interior I've seen so far. Cool beans.

AiM MSX dash, not holding back $$$$. 8525 RPM, I'm impressed with that Holmes small block. Joking aside, nice details there, really nice work.

I had the Mamba X and HH Stubby for another build, so I had already taken the $$ hit.

More details...

So, I got this thing put together and came to the same realization as everybody else. It sits too high. Ultimately I'll probably go with some 90mm shocks, but I decided to try the purple super soft springs first. It's a cheaper option than new shocks on all the corners. After dialing in a bit of preload I can get the rig to sit nice and level.

Oh, and I picked out some shoes. ProLine Krawlers (in Predator compound) on Vanquish Method 101 V2 wheels. These wheels are soooo nice in person. I finished them off with some LockedUp acorns and 225 hubs (to narrow it up a bit).

I got this little guy all painted up and it's ready to go. Let's start with a few glamour shots on the backyard playground before it gets covered in rock rash...

Thanks! The V2 101 wheels have such nice depth to them. I knew I wanted to use them somewhere. This rig turned out to be that chance. With the 225 hubs, they juuuuust clear the portals and tuck in the stance a bit. I'm happy.

The purple springs are really soft. They let me get the links to level. You can see how much preload I dialed in to get it to level in a couple of those photos (the rears are a little less). I've put a couple of miles on it so far and walked away very impresses. despite the soft springs, side-hilling didn't seem to be an issue. The one time I rolled it was because I wasn't really paying attention. I'm going to run it this way for a while before I decide if I want to go with some 90mm shocks.
