Dezfan’s Horny Old Goat (HOG)

DEZFAN’S Horny Old Goat!

https://i.ibb.co/NS8M2Ls/E2949-A91-9...-E361-F1-B.png

So I picked my Capra up last week and of course my schedule went to Hell the next day!

Got super busy and I’ve been traveling non stop.

But I had a few hours this afternoon to get started on my HOG! 🐐

I’m not going to do an in-depth review as Topher, Jato, and others have already done it. Nice work fellas. Made it easier on the rest of us. 👍🏼

Just going to document my experience with this new Axial/Horizon offering.

I started with the shocks.

I used an 8mm internal spacer I measured and cut from some PVC air line to shorten the Shocks to 90mm overall length.

The new shocks are a massive step up from past Axial offerings. Big ups to Axial on these new shocks.

Not quite as smooth as my Enduro shocks, but still very nice!👍🏼

I used the included Red springs with zero preload (minus the 8mm they are already preloaded from the internal spacer).

Only “issue” I had with the shocks was overlooking the installation of the black O-ring that goes in the shock cap on the first two shocks. ☺️

https://i.ibb.co/kQ5VnJG/8-C6-D8621-...E03-F53851.jpg

Next I moved onto the front axle.

Went together quickly and without a hitch.

https://i.ibb.co/sg8wG1m/A7-DB355-C-...-DB52246-A.jpg

Next I built the rear axle. Again, went together quickly and without issue.

I’m really liking the new plastic Axial is using, leaps and bounds better than their old Flubber recipe.

https://i.ibb.co/YPdKhxK/7333-E8-A9-...C74-F4-DB3.jpg

Started on the links next, these new links are freaking BEEFY! The new rod ends and stainless(?) pivot ball are another huge improvement over recent Axisl offerings!

Once again, great job Axial!

About as far as I got with the HOG this afternoon.

She don't eat meat, but she sure like the bone! :lmao:

The shocks should have also had o-rings around the bleeder screw IMO. Other shocks do. I'm concerned this will be the weak spot of the otherwise good looking shocks.

Re: Dezfan’s Horny Old Goat (HOG)

So I had a little time (and energy) after dinner, so I headed back out to the workbench.

Completed the remaining links and got them along with the servo mount and shocks attached to the axles.

https://i.ibb.co/R7Wp2Kn/09-A1767-B-...8-B5546189.jpg

https://i.ibb.co/k6Hmh4t/578611-DA-C...B5-D0-EBEC.jpg

Again, pretty much a strait forward build to this point. If you’ve built a kit before, you should be ok with the Capra.

I say this, yet I’m dreading the transmission build. Hopefully everyone’s prior experience will make it painless.

More to come...

Easier then figuring out the gear setup on a XR or Bully for sure lol. Depending on your manual print just remember there was a picture error on the spur shaft. "thumbsup"

The trans build was a piece of cake. Just watch for the error that everyone has already seen and pointed out and you'll be fine.

Snuck in a little build time after dinner.

After reading up on a couple build threads and paying close attention as I went, it came together fairly effortlessly.

Working on my other rigs as I have a GTG tomorrow, so the HOG will have to wait until tomorrow for any further progress.

dezfan 10-12-2019 07:38 PM

Re: Dezfan’s Horny Old Goat (HOG)

Well our local GTG was a bust.😡

So I went home and reorganized my garage and worked on the HOG. 🤪

Installed a Hackamoto 5 Slot 16T motor with the included pinion. I’ve used this motor in my Marlin Crawler and really like it. Smooth power delivery and good wheel speed.

Got the dig servo installed as well using the recommended Spectrum micro servo.

https://i.ibb.co/h2FCFfk/53-ECAAE8-D...48-D6-FFE0.jpg

Built the drive shafts using the updated Axial build sheet available on line.

Sharing it here to help anyone who might need it in the future.

https://i.ibb.co/2FNbmD7/11-D2-CBA3-...B543458-C8.png

https://i.ibb.co/5hBLKnb/E615-DD5-A-...65-F884-B0.jpg

Then attached the axles to the skid.

https://i.ibb.co/GJr3zRy/190-D7-D76-...4164-DE329.jpg

About that time the mail was deliver and a new set of bead locks showed up. 🤩

So I took a break from assembling the HOG and started assembling the new bead locks.

Now I have multiple choice for tire/foam/wheels to run on the HOG.

Combo one, RC4WD 4.75 Wrangler MTRs in the X2SS compound. I’m using Pro Line single stage foams as the included RC4WD foams seems to be to firm and narrow.

Mounted them up on a new set of 1.9 Injora wheels.

https://i.ibb.co/82HG489/31-F1-D469-...39-A27-B56.jpg

Combo two, Pro Line 4.75 BFG Krawlers in Predator compound. Using two stage Pro Line foams in these and they’re mounted on another set of 1.9 Injora bead locks.

https://i.ibb.co/9Z8zZqh/1-C1-BCA24-...02-DC35-E7.jpg

Combo three, Pro Line 4.75 Hyrax in Predator compound. Using two stage Lil Nova comp cut foams with a soft outer up front and a medium outer on the rear. Again mounted on a set of 1.9 Injora bead locks.

https://i.ibb.co/bd0KdQB/C5-A119-E0-...-D030848-E.jpg

Combo four, 4.19 Nottsix ChooDoo MTRs in “Chex” compound running stock foams and mounted of the stock Capra bead locks.

https://i.ibb.co/w4g8Fq6/7-C0790-B9-...ED33-D9-D6.jpg

About as far as I got before my back started hurting.

Damn old(er) age anyways! 🥴

What is your opinion for on the Hackmoto for reverse applications? Do you happen to know if it has any timing advance? I want to order one but could not find any specific info this. Thanks.

Okay, I've reconsidered. Duke has a good point. I'm a big fan of the ottsix choodoos. Those tires get sick traction plus being a smaller Tire, will lower the Capra down a bit giving you a lower lcg.

I’m not sure if the motor had advanced timing. I’ll have to check into it.

I run one in my Marlin and it runs great. Very smooth power delivery and plenty of wheel speed on 3S.

The Choo’s will definitely see fury on the HOG.👍🏼

We’ll find out soon enough. 😈

So this evening, I assembled the cage and attached it to skid. And mounted up the RC4WD MT/Rs as these bead locks are a bit narrower than the other sets.

https://i.ibb.co/dQGxhSW/CF2-E673-A-...BC822-FB83.jpg

With some people having clearance issues, I wanted to be sure at least one set of wheels would clear. These clear with room to spare!👍🏼

I’ll mount up and take pictures tomorrow as well getting pics of each wheels clearances.

And since it was just sitting there, I thought I’d see if the Bog Hog body I use on my Enduro would fit the Capra.

Like a glove! 😲

https://i.ibb.co/98jQpzb/CF82-F1-AC-...16-A8-C003.jpg

Found out that none of my Lipo’s fit, so it looks like I’ll be ordering a few more.😐

May have to rob a servo out of one of my other rigs as the one I’m wanting to use in the HOG is 3-4 weeks out.😡

Still trying to figure out what I want to do with the panels.

More to come...

Thought I’d do a test panel to see if the idea I had in mind for my HOG would look ok.

Give me your opinions.

May have to zoom in a bit to see the detail.

Black, silver, and old school Axial Green.

Re: Dezfan’s Horny Old Goat (HOG)

The 'black' looks more like 'dark green' against the lime green. The silver, yes...but, instead of black, come up with something that "jumps" from, as opposed to "blends" with, the green.

I need to work on my splatter technique a bit to get a little more color instead of the fine droplets.

Might help with the contrast if the black (and silver) where a bit more prominent.

We’ll see. 👍🏼

He and I both got into the splatter look around the same time.

But I can never stick with a paint scheme, I’m always changing my mind.

Well, the paint is about as done as it’s going to get.

Not 100% satisfied with the splatter, but it’ll do.

My color reference.

The Tamiya paint isn’t as Lime as I hoped.

But what are gonna do, it’s a Crawler. It’ll get drug across the rocks.

I like. I didn't care much for the "test" splatter...but the "finished" product is good. In the "test", I thought the black kinda 'blended'. With this, the black definitely stands out.
