Default Shock Talk

Just starting my build and wondering about a few points when setting up shocks.

Seems like many of you are immediately going to shorter shocks or internal limiters from the get-go...

Have any of you compared crawling the stock length shocks to shorter/limited shocks? Thoughts?

How are you limiting the stock shocks, internal limiters, internal springs, or shorter external springs?
Thoughts on which you prefer?

Any recommendations for what you'd consider an ideal shock length for 95% pure rock crawling, little to no rock racing?
(The occasional throttle blips to clear a gap is about all the speed I'll get.)

Thx.

Any feedback would be great, so I can get it reasonably dialed on the first go. I just hate rebuilding shock 3-4 times on a build. Thx.

My stock shocks have never even been out of the package.

I went straight to 2661 traxxas big bores. The capra doesn't need so much travel in my experience so an internal limiter would be a must.

Im using a 4mm limiter in my stockers and feel comfortable with it. IMO maybe 5mm at the most so you dont hurt articulation overall.

Too much limiting on the shocks I feel you start to bind the springs and make the suspension stiffer.

Well I’m usually doing something different and this is more of the same. I put 110mm traxxas shocks on and with just a bit of weight on the front axle found the performance to be very good. Next I went back to stock shocks with 2.2 wheels and voodoo pins. This needs a bit more weight on the front axle as the cog is much higher now but climbing is still very good same with side hilling for both setups. I don’t see the reason to limit except for looks as stock my trx4 could outcrawl it because it has more ground clearance

I just went stock shocks with the stock soft springs and included oil. No preload, no limiting, and it works fine for me, and the ride height is good, with the lower links being more or less level.

Mmmmmm, Kool Aid.

Any 90mm shock set up similarly will provide the similar results.

I’m still playing with the set up on mine.

At the moment. I’m using 8mm internal spacers.

50wt (going to try 60wt) oil with the stock Enduro Kit springs (shorter and softer than either set of springs included with the Capra.

Thats great to know right there.

Same ID on the springs or do they kind of float on the collars?

Thx for the replies. Based on what I'm hearing, having limiters somewhere between 4-8mm would be the sweet spot and hopefully not stiffen the suspension too much.

I should have pointed out I'll be running 2.2 but with the old school Losi Rock Carver tire, which sits at 5.2in tall.

So i definitely need to drop the high weight down a bit since the 2.2s will set everything higher.

Seems like the popular 1.9 tires dont exceed 4.75in, so at 5.2in, I'll be sitting roughly 1/4 in higher.

Great info!

Just so happens I have a set of stock Enduro springs!
