Default Overdrive questions...

For those of you that have installed Overdrive in your Capra's, or or experience with other vehicles, I'd like your opinion.

I noticed the hot racing Overdrive is about 10%, and the team garage hack Overdrive is about 30%.

Wondering which you would recommend?

Is 10% not enough?
Is 30% too much?
Will it stress or damage the drivetrain?
Will it toast my battery way faster?

Sorry for all the Newbie questions, I've just never done overdrive before.

Thanks!

I have 10% in my Capra and feel it could use more with no ill effects. I have 30% in my Wraith and feel it could use a little less with no ill effects. I guess ideally I'd say that the Goldilocks number for me is 20%. I went with 10% in the Capra because 1: that's all that was available at the time 2: it's already geared tall, so I didn't want to overload things much more.

Yes, it puts more stress on the drivetrain since it will always be in a bind. I normally would say that the difference in wear is negligible, but I did break a front portal drive gear. The OD portal gears wouldn't have that issue (breaking) since they're bigger, and made from hardened steel instead of powdered metal like the stock one I broke. The OD diff gears are of course harder to install too.

Yes, it will draw your battery down faster since the motor will always be under a load, but I doubt you'll notice the loss of runtime enough to care.

I guess my vote is: if you're going to bother with OD, go with the 30% portal gears so you'll have enough OD to notice a difference. Cost is about the same either way, the portal gears are stronger, and easier to install, just gear down at the pinion (go straight to an 11t.)

You could always put 30 in the front and 10 in the rear for an overall 20%, plus the fastest Capra around.

These claim to be 13% od, made by hot racing but I have yet to see any reviews.

I have the THG OD gears and really like them. Love the added turning radius.

Personal preference. I think 10% is too low.

I've never had OD over stress or ruin anything. Some people say it will, but I just can't see how. These RC's are just too light.

I started with the SSD 10% OD gears, and it was better than stock. I then bought the TGH versions and feel they are a good option. If anything, the portal axle gear options are a much easier install than the diff gears.

IMO 10% is not enough. 30% is what i have in capra axles and it makes me happy. any more may be overkill.

I like using both over and under gears in all my trucks but I'm strictly into performance on the rocks, I don't trail at all. Keeping those front wheels turning faster than the rears is critical to performance. Tight turning is important in maneuvering to and from gates. It also eliminates torque twist and keeps the suspension flexed.

If I was building a trail rig I would use only the under drive in the rear.

I have the Axial 27/8T Overdrive ring and pinon gears for the front axle in my Capra, and it's barely noticeable. I have the same OD gearing in several other AR44-axled rigs, and they are equally as mild, so that's no big surprise. Those other rigs are more scale/trail-oriented, so 10%-ish OD feels about right there. However, I think I can handle a little more OD in my Capra which is strictly a rock crawler for me. Any reason why I couldn't also throw the Hot Racing OD portal gears in to boost the total OD?

By my calculations, the combination of OD gears in the front axle and OD gears in the front portals would get me to a FDR of 31.78:1 (Front) and 39.99:1 (Rear) for 22.88% OD. I am using an 11T pinion and the stock 34T spur, and stock Capra trans. I'm running a Holmes Hobbies Crawlmaster Sport 20T 5-slot motor, and it's plenty slow on 3S now. Hoping it will stay that way even with the double OD setup.

That's what I am waiting for since its geared high already it makes more sense to under-drive the rear!!

I think a number of us would prefer to UD out back. Space limitations in the pumpkin and the portal boxes probably won’t allow for it though. At least not at anything near 30%.

Dont believe under drive will be out there. I remember Brandon saying something back in the SCx2 days that it wasn't possible to fit a bigger R/P in the AR44 housing. The Capra housings aren't any bigger inside.

Yup, he mentioned in his video the other night about the axles using the same lockers and R/P.

Thx for all the feedback!

Based on your input, I ended up going with TGH 30% OD portal gears. I spent about 90 minutes total using them at 2 different crawl spots and I'm really surprised at several things.

1- Steep climbs did improve, but not nearly as much as I'd expected.
2- Turning was wayyy better.
3- Sidehilling went down the toilet.

I really wanted them for improving steep climbs, and they helped for sure, but with dig and a little patience, there weren't any lines that required OD to make it.

There may be some other aspects of my setup that are hindering performance...
Not sure what to change next.
