Default Jens' 2.2S Pneuma.

So,-I wanted to give portal axles a try in the Sportsman class,-and bought a Capra kit back in October last year.,-long winter project....

Specs are :

Krazed Builds Pneuma chassis kit and Carbon front axle plate.

Stock Capra shocks,-limited both inside and outside, with Element Enduro springs.
Homebuilt titanium links,-4mm lowers with stock Capra and Traxxas 5347 rod ends and 3mm uppers with Traxxas 1942 rod ends.

AX10 stock plastic tranny housing with HR hardened steel light weight gears, homemade titanium idler gear shaft,HR 20mm extended locked spool and BWD alu motor plate.
Driveshafts are cut Losi NCR shafts with SDI universals and NCR drive cups.

Front axle has HR overdrive 13/22 portal gears and SSD 27/8 overdrive diff gears,-knuckle weights are not done yet,-but I have a plan Homemade 4mm titanium steering links and Answer servo horn. Rear axle is stock for now.

Wheels and tires are just for mock-up,-but I will most likely be using plastic buggy wheels,-but tires are not decided yet......

Electronics are Sanwa RX471,Castle BEC,Futaba S9177SV,Holmes BR Mini and Holmes Puller 400 13t XX

Body is still up for debate,-I have a few options in the parts bin and one in shipping from Amain

The link lenghts are as specified by Krazed Builds,-give or take a mm or two either way:

Builders Info:

Front Lower Links - 132mm eye to eye using Capra ball ends
Front Upper Links - 108mm eye to eye (recommend .125 rod w/Traxxas small ball ends)
Rear Lower Links - 138mm eye to eye using Traxxas 4mm ball ends
Rear Upper Links - 115mm eye to eye (recommend .125 rod w/Traxxas small ball ends)

Body mounts will be Gunnar type I think

Version one knuckle weights,-Ebay brass portal covers with modified TRX-4 outer brass rings. About 85 grams total per side.

Default Jens' 2.2S Pneuma.

First gentle test on the rocks yesterday just to check things,-gentle because I have not mounted a body yet

And wow,-I could tell right away that this thing works,-even though I was very careful and the rig is not 100 % adjusted. Krazed Builds sure have done their homework with this chassis !!

The amount of overdrive with the HR portal gears and 27/8 diff gears seems very good

I am using a 84t spur with a 18t pinion,-may have to go for a faster combo.

About the body,-still have not decided,-have Grappler Pro,Hardline and Xciter on the shelf......

First comp today with the Pneuma,-rig did very well,-but I did some mistakes.Because of really heavy rain in the afternoon,we had to stop the driving,-and there was only three of our six courses to base a result from,-and a I came in third

Big thanks to Steinar for the pictures

Looks like a great spot!

Congrats on a 3rd for your first comp, even with weather stopping you early.

Good looking rig and overall setup!
Why did you go with O/D R&P and OD portal gears and not the TGH extreme OD portal gears?

How does it compare with your other conventional shaftys?

I really like that body, I wish it was still made in 1/10 and 1/16 styles...

I believe the TGH OD gears are just too extreme

The rig climbs very well, seems very stable and is so smooth and predictable going downhill

Yes the Grappler is nice,-and more durable than the Xciter

So, do you consider the future is with Portals or not?
How do you feel the car reacts to side hills with the possible higher CG?
Hope to see it next EC ;)

I do like the increased clearance with the portals,-and the gearing is an added bonus regarding torque twist. So far I have not noticed any significant problems with higher CG.
But everything is give and take,-clearance,overdrive,weigth,width,-and so on.
And then you have personal preferences,-I like my rigs relatively light for example.
I also think it is important that the rig is predictable and reliable.

So it is not the portals that wins the Worlds,-it is a combo of a capable rig and a skillful and dedicated driver

Just my thoughts on the subject

Se you next EC
