Default Another Capra Hybrid

What’s up everyone, I know there’s been a couple scx/Capra builds. I’m thinking of jumping into that pool. Just want something a little different, and I know you can get the ar45’s now... I own a 10.3
I’m thinking about starting with a vs4-10 chassis, adapting the Capra skid, transmission, links, suspension etc. and of course.. the axles.
I’ve got enough parts and other stuff laying around, electronics wise and what not it should be a pretty quick project. Want something a little more wild than my 10.3 but looks more “scale” than the Capra lol and I don’t want to hear one word about “portals aren’t scale” I don’t care.

I’ll be ordering the chassis next week unless anyone has a better suggestion for a starting point. I’m open to suggestions or any other input.

Honestly, I'd keep the VS4-10 skid and pick up a 3 gear transmission.

Mind if I ask why? I like the idea of running the dig.

The Hurtz dig unit from Vanquish is actually far superior to the one in the Capra. I love my Goat, but if you're building around having a dig, just know that it is probably the weakest link in an otherwise awesome rig. Also the gearing in the Capra transmission is quite high. Sticking with the VP skid might save you some headaches.

I wouldn’t say I’m building it around the dig, and I have no clue on the dimensions of the 2 skids. But if I can adapt the Capra skid into the vs4 frame, I feel like that will save me some headache of mounting links and what not. Plus I’ll be running SOA and I believe the vs4 is CMS so it may not have the necessary mount for a true 4-link up front.
I know there’s probably better options than the Capra trans, but I’m not a hardcore guy or run comps. This is strictly a fun build, in hopes of combining 2 of my favorite platforms.

It will be brushed HH 35t torquemaster HW1080 esc, align ds450 for the dig and a savox 1212sg. All of which I already have.
I also plan on running the ‘69 blazer body I picked up, not a fan of how it fit my 10.3 but we will see.

I guess I should also note, I’m kind of building this in a budget. Having all the electronics is a big help

Well I think I ended making out on this deal, Holmes Hobbies 27t 540 Hobbywing 1080 esc
JR DS8711- looking for a top case, has a broken ear.
Sx107 for the dig
Fast Eddie bearing kit
Jconcepts ruptures tires, not my style but they’ll work. All for under $300
One of my Capra’s will be the donor and the other one will be built for my girl.

Should have the vs4 chassis day after tomorrow and can get this build underway

I tried using capra skid . Cut and ground down the side lip and it doesn't line up well. I did not want to drill holes in chassis rails and the main thing was the upper link mounts were way out of wack for my liking. So I ended up using the vs410 skid. Had to measure, mark and drill new capra trans mount holes but it worked much better. By doing that it gave me a headache of how to mount dig servo. I used a scx10ii side trays that have micro servo mounts molded in. Then I had to cut one down, drill and tap mount holes in metal side trays of vs kit. There is a company that makes a flat skid to mount a capra trans and I believe it would work on vs chassis. I can't remember where I seen it and it was out of stock so I my own thing. I will try and find the link to it and post for you to check out.

Right on, thanks for the heads up. My vs4 chassis should be in the mail today. I had a feeling it wasn’t just going to bolt together. I’ll look into the flat skid, but work case I’ll do some modifications and see what I come up with.

Can't wait to see how you build turns out. If you're going with AMS you will have to butcher out alot of the front servo mounts. Or look into TGH axle panhard mount for capras and run CMS. Just a heads up. Good luck with everything

Thanks! I’ll probably stick with the AMS for now. I have a scx10.2 front bumper mount that I believe will tie the chassis together up front for now and leave a ton of room. I’ll probably need to add a brace later but I wouldn’t be opposed to a CMS.
I ordered a scx10.2/Capra flat belly skid from intheworks rc and will likely fab up some shock towers.

Well here we are! For now I was able to trim down the stock Capra skid. Punch a couple new holes and raise the upper links up one notch. I could probably put them in the lowest setting in the future.
I did have to slightly notch the frame which wasn’t a big deal for me but probably could have done it a little cleaner, Which can be fixed.

Other than that I’ve got a rolling chassis, it needs a brace at the front shock towers which I will work on. But not bad for a couple hours of work
Enjoy some pics

I think these are the most interesting and fun types of projects, taking things that really aren't meant to go together and figuring out how to make them work. It looks great and I'm interested to see how it works out.

Yea absolutely, I know It’s not the first one done, but everyone puts their own spin on things. I hope this will help the next guy that wants to try something different.
Your vfd Capra btw is awesome. I wish I had the time tools and patience for stuff like that.

Thanks, it actually turned out to be a pretty fun and not super time consuming project. In 2 nights and I think about 6 hours from starting tear down on the Capra to driving the Completed chassis.

Default Another Capra Hybrid

So here’s some more pics, not sure what to call this thing.. the SCapra, SCapra-X
Anyways got the electronics mounted and drove it around my living room.
I ended up chopping up the front chassis brace as I’ll be staying AMS. That gave me all the support I needed and mounting for the shock towers, battery tray, etc. needs some finishing touches but it’s about ready for the rocks. The suspension seems to cycle freely and has plenty of articulation.
I plan to change the shock towers later for more adjustment.

I will paint the Blazer body this week and might have to drill some holes to run the axial sliders. Or not. I haven’t decided. Still thinking I’ll run the body on magnets to keep the clean look.
Also don’t mind the tires, I plan on running something in the 4.19-4.5 range I haven’t totally decided on that yet either.
Enough talking, here’s the pics I promised

Got some paint laid down, stickers cage and mounting tomorrow.
I’ve also got a 17.5t brushless setup out of an old B5 I can’t get rid of that may work it’s way into this build.

Here it is for now, swapped over to some smaller tires, but still think I’ll drop down to a 4.5” and go from there. Decals in place, not the most perfect job but hey it’s going to get driven.
