High Altitude 2.2 Shepard comp rig
 
Time for a build thread. This is the second Shepard I've built, I sold my first one at the beginning of the year after I bought a new house. Current specs are stock axles, links and 4wd locked capra trans. Futaba S9177 servo, HH BRXL and a Team Br00d 30t brushed motor for the time being.

Proline IBEX 2.2 tires with CI 5.5 dual stage foams wrapped around High Altitude P35 carbon wheels. The fronts are on 475 SLW hubs to clear the brass knuckle weights and the rears are 225 hubs with the face tucked back for a deep dish look.

Prototype brass portal covers with room for 3/8" tungsten slugs. Fully loaded they add 7oz per side.

Currently its sitting at 4lbs 3oz RTR with no added weight, should be around 4lb 14oz with knuckle weights and a painted body. Going to throw some paint at it and get it wired up this week so I can get it out on the rocks this weekend. Its been too long since i've had a super capable 2.2 shafty rig to play with.

100% stock shocks aside from 1/4" limiters in the front and 1/2" limiters in the rear. Soft Red springs with no preload all around.


As soon as the rig is ready to drive I'll get out with the go pro and get some videos.

Progress was hindered a little bit to work on a new skid and trans design. Back on track tonight, splatter paint and wiring. Trying to hit the rock Saturday morning with Turtle for some semi professional pics.

Overall I'm very happy with the car to start with, its smooth and predictable and the IBEX are shaping up to be a killer tire even in 100* weather. The only things that really need to change at the moment are 350 hubs in the rear to get the rear width closer to the front width and possibly a 10t pinion to get a little more low end control. The car has plenty of wheelspeed, so gearing down a little will help motor temps and battery life.

Been driving this rig and getting more used to how it reacts and can start to figure out which direction I want to go next. Big one on the list is more reduction and cutting some weight. i ordered some grade 5 titanium rod last week for links, and started working on a new skid and trans set up.

Based on XR gears with a slight forward motor design. Will be capable of 9:1 to 4.5:1 overall reduction. Finalizing the gear spacing and layout before I commit to designing the case and sending everything to Shapeways.

That is a great looking and performing rig. I went with a sporty chassis on my capra also. Trying to really get it dialed in. I am itching to pull the trigger on those 2.2 ibex tires. How much of an improvement can I expect going from a 1.9 tire to a 2.2? Also do you have the tie rod bent and steering stops shaved down? What would I accomplish by moving the upper links to the highest of the 3 holes on the skid? The truck already drives good but I'm looking to just take it to that next level. I think I had my shocks a little to laid out so I moved them up a hole. Any tips are appreciated Thanks

The 2.2 Ibex tires are the shit. The extra height and smaller lugs will give much more traction and axle clearance.

The steering stops are completely shaved off, and the tie rod is bent to clear the diff with 60*+ of steering angle.

Moving the uppers up in the front makes the front dive under power which helps keep the front axle down on obstacles. Its not a universal thing though, your COG is different and you will see different affects from link geo changes.

Good info thank you. What is the advantage to running the slw hubs? Is this mainly to offset the wheels to clear the weighted knuckles, or do they serve another purpose? TIA

Pretty much at a stand still due to Fusion's latest update that kills support for the hobbyist. Its now severely limited and a huge pain in the ass to design something with multiple parts.

Question, where is a good place source the 2.2 lightweight comp style wheels without breaking the bank? Anything out there? Having trouble finding something. Ordered some 2.2 wheels off amazon and they are heavy as shit, definitely not what I was looking for.
