Maslin's Bomber Not-Ready-To-Run Build

Couldn't help myself, the Bomber is what I've spent 2 years trying to create with my Wraith. Servo clearance is fixed. Rear uptravel is fixed. Electronic packaging is fixed. Very happy with the design on this one.

Out of the box, tore down to a bare skid and trans. Wife thinks I'm crazy

Where it stands now.

Hot Racing spools with HD gears front and rear
Axial universals in the front
VP scale knuckles and c hubs
VP trailing arms
Traxxas push rods lower links
Holmes TRLILMASTER Pro 3300kv
Castle MMP
Castle BEC
Savox 1283 on a custom plate
Home made 5/32 music wire steering links
RBIIs on Hitmans and DoubleDeuces
Spektrum TX/RX
MIPs front and rear
Proline Powerstrokes for Slash, front and rear, 100mm rear 90mm front.

Wraith front MIP doesn't drop in. Had to swap the extended trans side for a short MIP end and trim the screw lug off the RX box. Barely clears. Barely.

Spektrum RX is a press fit in to the box. Don't even need servo tape. RX, BEC bypass and wires are all you can get in there. I installed the 2 speed servo bracket and mounted the BEC and remaining wires to it. Zip tied the MMP to the top rear of the RX box, basically stock location.

5000mah 3s just fits on the box, should provide lots of run time.

As it is. Have to raise the rear spring weight, the primary is collapsed. Trailing arms really bump that leverage ratio :lmao:

RTR = Ready To Rebuild. The rig looks great Maslin.

Front MIP clearance. Hits the rear screw boss on the RX box, trimmed it down. Hits the upper link screw, spaced it out. Barely clears, doesn't seem to rub.

Put the yellow "medium" primary springs on the back, they sit mid stroke, leveled the back out almost perfect.

Quick vid around the shop. It's freezing and icy outside ;-)

3300kv Holmes trailmaster pro, mmp, 5000mAh Venom 3s 35c, 12/64 gearing (stock) Ran it in the parking lot for a second, carries the front wheel at will.

Hows low speed with that setup? Looking at going brushless sensored on mine 8)

It's great. Ends up as the same gearing as I had in my Wraith, 12/56. Definitely needs a rear sway bar, it torques hard. Might bump the gearing a bit as well, a tooth or two up on the pinion or maybe a 60t spur.

Pulled the stickers off, the engineering drawing paint is too cool to cover up.

Any pictures of the 5/32 music wire steering links you made?

Re: Maslin's Bomber Not-Ready-To-Run Build

I've been using these for a few hundred hours on my Wraith, never even replaced a revo end. Not too bad to get the bends with some heat, threading it is terrible. Shattered 4 SnapOn dies to get the 4 ends threaded

That Trailmaster rips pretty good in there. I was thinking of going with the Puller Pro but I may save a few dollars and go with the the Trailmaster after seeing your video.

I was going to ask if it stays cool but nothing will get above freezing in your neck of the woods until spring.

Re: Maslin's Bomber Not-Ready-To-Run Build

I think I would go with the 4 pole motor. This thing needs more torque than a wraith. It bogs pretty bad in the snow, a higher pinion and some wheel speed would help there too.

Not much chance of heat issues now, I waited for it to hit 20 before I ran around the track today :lmao:

It jumps pretty well, nose heavy like the yeti. Lands much much smoother than my wraith or my buddy's yeti. The back of the wraith would bottom out on big hits, the yeti slams constantly. I'm impressed.

Re: Maslin's Bomber Not-Ready-To-Run Build

After my issues with broken and stripped driveshaft screws I refuse to loctite them. Consequently, I have to tighten them every 2 or 3 hours... On the wraith it was easy, on the rr10 it's impossible.

So I drilled some holes. Now I don't have to worry about it, and I don't have to remove the entire cage to check them.

Shaved off the Wraith style sway bar mounts at the back. Also removed the servo bosses from the rear truss. Don't think it can go up any more than this "thumbsup"

Lands nice and smooth, my wraith was always so abrupt. Icy pavement isn't the best for traction, probably 30% throttle for the last 8 feet or so.

Re: Maslin's Bomber Not-Ready-To-Run Build

Like many, my transmission has a slight tick from time to time. It's rainy and cold, so I tore it down. Figured it might help some people out.

Cage removed, motor pulled out, drive shafts popped off, remove the 6 bolts from the bottom of the chassis and you have this.

http://s2.postimg.org/5c2s8tzix/IMG_...122515_hdr.jpg

2 screws and the transfer case slides off.

http://s2.postimg.org/717a35puh/IMG_...122641_hdr.jpg

1 more screw and the transfer case is apart. Metal gears and sealed bearings throughout.

http://s12.postimg.org/o9bozmsv1/IMG...122805_hdr.jpg

Back to the transmission, 4 screws and the back half comes off. Not much going on, bottom rail floats on 2 bearings, top rail goes directly to the spur gear.

http://s2.postimg.org/d63du87bt/IMG_...123151_hdr.jpg

The plug for the 2 speed shift rail will fall in to the case, don't forget to put it back.

Pretty good grease coverage, a little thin for my liking. Lubed it up with my Mercedes wheel bearing grease of choice, maybe the noise will be gone "thumbsup"

Re: Maslin's Bomber Not-Ready-To-Run Build

Picked up an RRP Gen 3 slipper. Looks a lot better hanging out the back and metal on metal always sounds good :flipoff: The placement of the spur moved the pinion back on the motor shaft a good bit as well. The stock setup had the Robinson pinion barely hanging on to the end.

I have to get some rear upper links, the ends are already worn out on my stock arms. Not even an hour of run time

Re: Maslin's Bomber Not-Ready-To-Run Build

Are you not running the spur and pinion cover at all? I was thinking about running mine that way since its rear facing. I run my deadbolt with no cover due to an oversized spur and haven't had any issues after months of use.

You mentioned the spur being moved inward towards the trans, that's good news because that reduces the amount of leverage and flex that can happen to the top shaft while force is being applied by the pinion. It'll ensure the mesh stays truer under heavy loads like brushless power and is better for wear.

Re: Maslin's Bomber Not-Ready-To-Run Build

I haven't used a spur cover in years, I ran a 66t spur on my Wraith long ago and it never made it back on. The only 13t pinion I had is really worn, so they're super loud. I'll grab another pinion today and see if it quiets down a bit.

Re: Maslin's Bomber Not-Ready-To-Run Build

Well if it survived on a Wraith, your Wraith, then I'm sure it's good. Compared to the way the Wraith trans faces forward and the tires steer and roost right at the face of the spur, this RR10 trans seems pretty shrouded from harm, even without the cover on. I don't care if it makes noise. My Servo never shuts up.

Re: Maslin's Bomber Not-Ready-To-Run Build

Threw an Axial sway bar on until Vanquish fires up the currie mill... fits well, seems pretty stiff for "soft"

Just tucks around the frame at full bump, doesn't hang up at all.

As it sits now. Excited to try out the sway bar, even if it's just in the shop. Montana winter sucks :flipoff:
