Wraith front CVD fitment issue

My stock rtr dogbones clicked bad at full turn. I took the advice of many others here and bought a set of Wraith CVD's pn# AX30780. I noticed a lot of play between the bearing in the knuckle and the pin inside the hub. I went to my LHS and found that Traxxas pn#1747R would or could fix my issue. I put in the washers and now the slop is gone. I ran her in the yard and all is good.

Good info, thanks for sharing the part number. Just make sure it's not to tight or any binding at full turn.

Yeah I got a few things today😇. The pn# for the washers is TRA1685. I noticed they are listed as fiber but they rigid and smooth. I'll update if anything good or bad happens.

I installed a set in mine and had no issues at all. Works great.

Good catch CMB.

Good info, I noticed the same play when I built my front axle on Friday night. Added TRA1685 to my shopping list.

shimming is a bad idea if you optimised the steering for crawl performance / used the maximum way the cvd's can go.

It's bad if the shims pull the joint out of alignment with the pivot. A little float allows the shaft to find center on its own.

I throw a 5mm washer behind the pin and tighten it all down with a ratchet, don't break universals any more now than I did before. I hate loose wheels :lmao:

Re: Wraith front CVD fitment issue

I'll typically mock up the axles by fully assembling without the stub axle shims and then steering to full lock paying attention to the outer stub axles position to see if it gets pulled/pushed relative to the wheel bearings. This determines if large diameter shims need to go between the inside of the stub and the inner bearing, or between the drive pin and the outer bearing.

As mentioned, you want the centerline of the U-joint of be inline with the kingpin inclination (steering axis) to prevent bad side loading of the U-joint and the wheel bearings.

I prefer to use steel shims as compared to the fiber units both because the steel shims are thinner and hold tighter tolerances and the fiber ones wear slightly where they contact the bearings.

It's almost funny how different brands of parts hold different tolerances. Some of my trucks have required minor filling on the back side of the wheel hex without any shims, others require inner and outer shims, and some require over a mm of outer shims.
