Default Budget upgrade for axles?

I know the VP Currie axles are quite popular but they are not in my budget. Are there any other axles that are an upgrade to the AR60s that are more budget friendly? Or are the alternatives not worth mentioning and just stick with the AR60?

OR...are there some budget friendly upgrades to the AR60 axles themselves that significantly improve durability / performance?

Putting together a shopping list for a Bomber build and looking for some budget friendly options.

I would upgrade to axial Universal Drive Shaft Set and some beef tubes...

Huge turn radius upgrade and cheap...

What kind of power are you putting in it?

I did the vanquish c's, and axial cvd's. I just placed an order for the beef tubes. Need to add some weight to the front of the rig, loops out on the steep stuff.

Yeah, I have the VP stage 1 and RCbro knuckle weights on my list.

So axial Cvds and beef tubes are the consensus?

You might want to also check out the Dlux big bearing mod housings.

If you're already planning on knuckle weights then trusses from Dlux might get you the strength needed as opposed to Beef Tubes.

For more durability and steering throw, replace the dogbones with Axial universals.

At some point the diff gears will fail, replace them with the Axial HD versions paired with upgraded lockers.

When your housing or pinion bearing fails, replace it with the Dlux modded axle housing.

So you are saying I should just get curries? Ha!

If you get Curries you still need your stage 1 plus shafts, diff gears, lockers and bearings. Shore up the stock housings with Beef Tubes and/or a truss and you can replace the other components as-needed

If you want to keep plastic housings then dlux modded housings and beef tubes. But honestly for a little more you can get SSD housings and be done.

I am not opposed to keeping plastic housing, I just want to make it so I am not breaking stuff with the 3s pro puller.

So I would need two sets of beef tubes for the front and the rear? Or just the front?

I plan on under driving the rear, so I will get HD gears in the rear. What do the upgraded lockers do for me?

If staying with the plastic housing, do I get a skid plate like DMG?

I've run my Wraith with a Puller Pro on 3s for months and sometimes on 4s without breaking anything besides hex pins. I use the Dlux housings and Beef Tubes all around.

You need something to stiffen the rear axle. You could go with a full-length truss from Dlux or Beef Tubes which also add weight down low.

The stock lockers will likely fail with that kind of power. Holmes, LURC and Grip Fab all make good lockers. Stay away from the VP lockers, IMO they are a sub-par offering from VP.

I run DMG skid plates when I'm out goofing around or bashing but take them off for serious crawling. The skids hang up a lot but the rock here is so abrasive that it eats through plastic housings like wonder bread. That's my main justification for NOT getting SSD or Currie housings - I can't bring myself to spend on parts that the rock will be eating. If they made them from steel or titanium it might be a different story.

Good stuff here Mike, thanks! Which Pro Puller are you using?

I've got the 3500 standard and have been extremely happy with it. I had most of the upgraded drivetrain already in place, otherwise the carnage would have been epic.

I'll be honest, I didn't read what anyone posted but. I suggest driving it till it brakes the upgrade. I have never used beef tubes on ar60 axles. Even with lots of power.

If you need s budget I can only recommend job welding your diffs, and VP c hubs and steering blocks. If crazy steering angles are a must then a set of cvds. But honestly don't spend hundreds . Just drive it and fix it as it breaks

Hope my opinion helps

I have axial universals on my bomber an i do not like them at all.. after a couple runs the "u-joint" part of the axle got really loose an sloppy.. like mentioned above so the tires flop around a little bit..

if i were to do it again i would pay a little bit more an go VP vvd's
