It's been a while since I've made an update here and big happenings are afoot - not with the rig itself, but rather it's first real test at the upcoming RECON G6 "Shaka Brah Classic IV" followed by the "Top 10" comp on Oahu. I finally installed the Bomber interior to make it C3 legal and added sand ladders, tow strap, pull pal and a small light bar for the G6. Performance-wise, there's nothing major to report, it's all been working great. I added some shrink tube sleeves to the shocks to make them truly dual rate and dropped the BEC in favor of a dedicated servo/receiver battery. A new Bluebird micro servo now handles the dig shifting so my Hitec 7950 can go back in the spares pile. The tummy tuck is still going strong. I've taken to gluing the tires to the wheels with shoe goo rather than CA so I can easily and cleanly disassemble them every couple months to clean and dry the foam. Here's a few action shots I took today while getting in some practice for this weekend. Later I'll post up some shots with all the accessories installed. |

My third RECON G6 is in the books and this rig helped me earn another 2.2 Driver of the Day award. I was also able to jump onto the Oahu Top Ten list at position #7 during the following day's comp. I am able to definitively declare that this rig is as capable and reliable as I ever hoped. During two solid days and one night of competitive crawling, I did not suffer a single glitch or breakage and was able to clear every gate on every course without assistance. Now that it has proven itself amongst the 2.2 crowd, I think it's time for another change... Here's a few pics from the Shaka Brah Classic IV on Oahu. |

Really good news that the tummy tuck holds! And has plenty of testing. |

My Hawaiian rig got to spend some time playing in the Southwest Colorado cold and snow. I was surprised how well it handled the conditions which ranged from 20° frozen tundra to mud and muck in the mid 40's. I also had a chance to spend a couple hours on the rock pile at The Crawl Space in Denver which is a haven during the long winter months. |

Today was a good day for Levior. Nearly one year ago I set out to conquer the normally dry Waiakea Stream in Hilo, HI. It took this custom-built rig, seemingly endless modifications, over a hundred hours of practice, and several dozen attempts but today I was finally able to complete a no-touch run of the entire upper section. This challenge forced me to push the limits of what I though was possible for a scale rig. I learned a ton in the process and am glad I was able to share some of that with the RCC community. I shot a bunch of crappy video of my first three attempts today so I'll pick out some of the good bits, assuming there are any, and post them to YouTube when I get a chance. It takes far too long on my crappy internet connection from home. Now that I have completed this goal I can move on to the next chapter for Levior - conversion to a 1.9 rig with SCX10.2 axles. |

It is soooooo much fun when a rig is completely dialed in, it's very satisfying. Looking forward to seeing your Bomber evolve.

Here are the unedited videos of my second attempt to complete Waiakea Stream. In this run I had three touches and was able to correct my mistakes by the fourth and final run. I apologize for the quality, I was more focused on driving than recording. Conversion to 1.9 has begun! I stole the axles out of my 10.2 kit and am swapping them straight with minimal mods to begin with. The rear axle is done and was a piece of cake, only requiring a relocation of the upper shock mount and swapping long jato rod ends for standard. I might shorten the wheelbase just a smidge and will definitely add some spacers to widen the stance. I've got to 3D print some more wheels then I can use my 'Shifts' hubs and spacers to get the desired wheel offset. I love how compact these 10.2 axles are! I figured by going from 2.2 to 1.9 this rig would lose significant clearance but it's not going to be as bad as I thought. The front is going to be a challenge for servo mounting but I think I've got it figured out...3D printer to the rescue again! |

Front axle and CMS... I knew going in that mounting the servo was going to be the primary challenge. I mimicked the setup of the SCX10.2 and printed some trusses (white elements) to mount the servo and it's working quite well. The wheelbase looks pretty good and doesn't need much, if any adjustment. The ride height looks just about right as well. The panhard bar and steering link line up almost perfectly. I actually mounted the top end of the panhard to the servo pivot. One printed truss behind the servo and one up front keep it solidly in place. I had one prototype wheel already printed and mounted it up with a Shifts hub and 9mm of spacers. |

Awesome build man. It's inspirational to see a truck evolve like yours has. The 10.2 axles look at home under there. My only concern is for the longevity of your steering servo. While the panhard geometry and packaging look spot on, isn't it going to make for hell on the servo since the output is responsible for locating the front axle side to side and the servo is basically leveraging off of itself when steering? Not trying to be a naysayer, just concerned for your servo. Is there any way to hang a bracket under the servo output with a small bearing and longer bolt to support the panhard in double shear and take some stress off of the servo output? Maybe your holmes is tough enough to take it as is? Since your one of the few to actually have high torque Hitecs, Holmes, and Promodeler servos, what are your thoughts and comparisons of the lot? |

I have the same concern about mounting the panhard to the servo output. I've been able to get away with less robust parts since this is a slow, light rig. I been running the stock plastic c-hubs, knuckles and lockouts; carbon fiber comp wheels (and now 3D printed ABS); a single Holmes BR mini ESC and an aluminum gearset. It's all held up beyond my expectations so I'm going to keep pushing. I'm paying close attention to that panhard setup but I think the Holmes servo can handle it. If I do make a change, I'll hang a bracket off the frame similar to the SCX10.2 Of the three servo brands I've used, the Promodeler is my favorite but the Holmes is just as quiet and capable, now that the center pin issue seems to be resolved. There's a lot more beef in the Promodeler gearset but it was too tall to put in this setup. I put one of my Hitecs in the kids' stock Bomber with plastic links so it'll be OK there and the other is just a spare. I won't be buying any more Hitec servos. |
