Beginner Bomber
 

Just ordered my bomber. Looking forward to getting started on a build I have seen a lot of variations and exciting changes on in other forums. I am a big "newb" to all of this so any advice will be welcomed!

Some of the pre planned upgrades are as follows:

New servo horn
Trailing arms

Brushed 21t motor
20t pinion gear
Cheap and quick increase in speed

Titanium or stainless Links front/rear
Stage one kit from vanquish products
Replace the dog bones with universal kit
Aluminum body panels (paint)

New tires and wheels
Crawler innovations foams
Looking at either flat iron or voodoo tires haven't decided on wheels
Change in suspension if there isn't an earlier need. Eventually a dual shock system in the rear.

New servo if it hasn't died before all the other upgrades.
BEC

Eventually I will go brushless. Hoping to learn more about the brushless systems and how to make the conversion so that I can make a better decision on motor and esc for what I want.

Looking forward to the package arriving and all of the fun to be had with my new rig!

(I've also seen a lot of the independent suspension rigs in the forums and that looks like a conversion I will make in the distant future! Love the stance and look of that conversion as well as the high speed control that comes with it)

Congrats on the new addiction and welcome. Looks like you've got a pretty good plan outlined already. 20 teeth might be on the high side for a pinion so just keep an eye on temps. You can get a cheap infra red temp gun from harbor freight for less than $20 and it works well and will serve you many times. Once you decide what brushless system you want you'll gain a ton more speed than the chassis can handle and you'll be able to drop the pinion size as well. For ESC, I'll go ahead and throw the Castle Mamba Monster X out there. It's sensored brushless, factory waterproof, has a plenty powerful internal BEC, and has the awesome aux wire function for turning drag break on and off on the fly. Awesome thanks for the info on the esc! That's something I don't know a lot about along with the whole BEC setup. Looking to learn a lot more about brushless setups. I know I want sensored so I can crawl better but I'm not sure what else to look for. I've seen a lot of people are running the Holmes hobbies motors and the mamba max pro and mamba monster X seem popular for esc choices as well.

Holmes motors are top shelf and his customer service and activity right here on these forums is unrivaled. All of his stuff is also manufactured in house in the US which is a good plus. The MMP is a bit smaller but is not waterproof from the factory and will absolutely need an external BEC for an additional $20ish. When you factor that, the price gets rel close to the same but you don't get the programmable aux wire with the MMP. The MMX is the best choice IMHO and is more designed for 1/8th scale which makes it more than enough ESC for your needs. I like overkill.

welcome to the bomber brotherhood! can't wait to see your build progress, personally I'm having too much fun with mine in its stock form to throw money at it just yet. you made a great choice.

Just got the bomber after it sat in my apartment for a week while I was out of town. Talk about anxious.

Love it already. It's a beast much more speed and power out of the box than I expected. (Didn't see many videos with stock electronics)

Looks like a new servo will be added much sooner than anticipated.
Going to get a sway bar asap as well.

Turns out the servo is stripped. Just order a savox 1230. Not real upset since the steering from the stock servo seemed limited and was obviously a weak servo.

This will be the next servo I will buy, looks to be better quality than the savox and nearly the same price. 420oz-in v3 great servo from the reviews I've read.

That servo looks very nice. If the savox dies then I will definitely consider that servo looks like a quality part.

I have picked up the incision links and a set of cheap aluminum trailing arms for the time being.

Next I'm going for a sway bar. Most likely the Currie from vanquish.

All stock. Took the servo from my scx10 and ran the bomber a bit today. Couldn't take the wait for my savox to arrive. Loving this rig.

Upgraded to the savox servo added all stainless vanquish links and a pair of aluminum trailing arms from eBay for the time being. Also removed the spare tire. Looking forward to upgrading to spools and adding the vanquish stage 1 kit soon. As well as a set of beef tubes. I've decided to go the crawler direction on this build instead of the U4 style truck. Thinking about going to a wraith trailing arm as well.

Put in a 14 tooth pinion and torched the motor...

Time to go brushless. Not sure what I'm going to do as my budget won't allow a MMX and Holmes puller pro like I'd prefer. I've seen some good things about hobby wing recently and may try one of their systems and eventually upgrade my bomber and use the hobby wing in another vehicle.

I'm running a 90 amp xerun with a 13.5 T motor on 2s. 16/64 now from 15/64. Motor and esc had no problem even in the 100 degree CA heat yesterday.

I've never had a problem with any of my Hobbywing esc's or brushless motors.

This is more of a speedy setup for U4. There is still some low speed control but definitely not a crawling only setup.

If I used the esc and ran a 17.5t motor would that help on the low end?

17.5T will help on low end, but if you're crawling only you may want to look above 20T. The esc will work fine for whatever turn motor you go with. All the features are there.
