motor and speed controller upgrade. What gearing?

I just got a mamba Max Pro and a 17.5 turn motor in a trade. I have the stock gearing. What would be a good place to start? Thanks guys"thumbsup"

what are you trying to do with it? bash or crawl? running 2s or 3s?

bash and crawl. 3s maybe 4s

any suggestions would be great guys. I'm hoping to get ready tonight for a run with a few friends after work

A 17.5t motor is pretty fast for this rig. Stock is 35t and it seems even that could use some reduction. I'd run a 10t or 11t pinion, start out with 2s LiPo and keep an eye on motor temps. If it stays cool enough you could easily kick it up to 3s. Better to be on the slow side than burn up a motor first time out.

Re: motor and speed controller upgrade. What gearing?

17.5t turn doesn't mean much. Whats the kv? Looks like most brushless motors marked 175t are ~2000kv. That's really slow in a Bomber, unless you plan on running 4s.

3s with a 3000/3300/3500kv motor geared somewhere around 13/14/15t pinion, 64t spur is normal. Good speed, plenty of crawlability.

I never even plugged a battery in to my Bomber with the brushed system, but I heard it was laughably slow even on 3s.

If you are intent on running that motor you're going to definietly be using 4s and gearing up, like 17/18 on the pinion. Somewhere around 23t pinion on 3s to keep up with the average 3300kv motor.

Re: motor and speed controller upgrade. What gearing?

I assumed he was talking brushed motor. If it is brushless then it's a different story.

And be careful taking advise from maslin - you'll end up with a land-based rocket ;-)

EDIT - it would be helpful for all of us if you could post make and model or a picture of the motor "thumbsup"

I suspect your 17.5 is brushless sensored ?
Due to the MMP

I run A 17.5 tekin sensored and a MMP, nice combo

HANG UP AND DRIVE !

Re: motor and speed controller upgrade. What gearing?

3300kv, 14/64 on 3s isn't all that fast. Could certainly handle going faster.

I couldn't get the pictures to load up for some reason. The speed controller is a mama Max like I said. The motor itself is a 17.5 turn xtec LRP X 12 vector stock spec motor.

thanks for the information guys. I need to go buy some pinions:roll:

Re: motor and speed controller upgrade. What gearing?

yes it is a sensored brushless

Yeah, brushless so ignore what I said about 10t pinion and listen to maslin. "thumbsup"

found the motor 2200kv

Just for comparison's sake...

I feel that 3300kv geared 14/64 on 3s is a good middle ground.

That's 36630 rpm / 4.57 gear ratio = 8015 rpm input.

4s - 14.8 x 2200 = 32560 rpm / 8015 = 4.06 gear ratio, 64t spur, 15 or 16t pinion.

3s - 11.1 x 2200 = 24420 rpm / 8015 = 3.05 gear ratio, 64t spur, 21t pinion.

Drop a tooth or two on the pinion to be a little slower, I wouldn't want to be too far off from there.

Re: motor and speed controller upgrade. What gearing?

Gear it 21/64 for 3s like maslin posted, then stick in a 4s on occasion to make some smiles.

maslin 09-07-2016 03:48 PM

Re: motor and speed controller upgrade. What gearing?

21/64 is going to be tough on that motor. I'd probably go with 15/64 and a mix of 3s and 4s.

3 Attachment(s)
hopefully I get to finish this up today. Looking through all my stuff. I found a few other options. One is the mamba Max Pro and the LRP 2200kv motor. Option two is a mamba Max Pro with that 8.5 turn 4620kv track star motor. Option three is LRP spx8 competition ESC and the Pro for 4600 KV. not too familiar with brushless stuff just yet. Any advice? Thanks"thumbsup"
