Thanks.... Still working on my K10 Ascender, it has at least been driven for about a half-dozen packs. It's nearly done with its upgrades!

Working on it has made me more desiring of getting around to this one...

And, I did get a good soldering iron for Xmas - that'll help with the electronics.

Funny thing - the longer I wait on this the more ideas I get to make it stand out.

Hopefully I'll be able to implement at least some of them...

Can't figure out if it is a self-defeating, self-deprecating, or self-fulfilling title.

Obviously, since the first couple posts I've read and learned a lot about what I want to do, and have discarded or rejected several options in the past.

Almost embarrassing, reading the motor choice & servo usage parts. If I was a less humble guy, I'd delete those sections now!

Funny thing is, Holmes now has a version of that servo that CAN be run on 2S/3S/4S...

I'm currently stuck at the soldering stage - fell asleep in my chair this evening, before I was about to break out my new soldering iron and test it out.

Was going to see if my skills were up to the task, been many years since I used a soldering iron - but it was a piece of crap...

I made sure and got an adjustable this time, and some other tools to hopefully help me do a decent job. I have some tremors in my hands, so I got one of those Third Hand things with the magnifying lens.

Anyways - I'm currently focused on finalizing my Ascender mods. When I'm done I hope to pick this back up. The soldering will include electronics for both vehicles. which will get me at least partly going on this Bomber.

(Oh, yeah - the table still looks basically like that - good thing there's no woman here, it would have been boxed up and stashed in a closet long ago. Instead, there's even more stuff added.)

I got a brand new soldering iron - Trak Power TK 950 - this December for my Birthday! Absolutely love this unit and the ability to dial in power for different gauge wire. I no longer dred soldering!

Did you get any color on your skins yet?

No, that will likely be the last thing I do, as I may need to file the edges of the aluminum as well as drill some additional holes. Gonna shoot them with some gray self-etching primer, then OD green & black, then matte clear over the decals. This time it's all Tamiya TS lacquer instead of polycarbonate-specific paint. Hopefully it won't jack up the decals, I'll test it out first.

Yep, I'd definitely do a test with the decals if using lacquer based.

Got some radical changes in store for the build(s)...

I got myself one of those wacky noisemakers HH re-released - A 1800kv Revolver. I'm now definitely building two Bombers, completely unique from one another.

I'm mounting it to a Xtreme Racing carbon fiber rail chassis meant for the Bomber skid and other parts to be swapped onto it. The battery can be installed lengthwise front, rear, or transverse front. I also have 3 very different diameters of wheel/tiresets to test. It should have loads of space for electronics, I'll be using 4S LiPos, a new CC WP BEC 2.0 and a ProModeler servo. Going to start with stock kit gearing (64/12) and std HD diff gears, but I have a large assortment of pinions, and a temp gauge. Going for crawling performance, not speed. Big UGLY GMC TopKick body (supposed to be for a HPI Savage XL - wheelbase match!) painted in military colors... So - it's SUPPOSED to be loud and obnoxious!

I'm curious if the "BWD MOTOR SAV'R" that Holmes sells will fit over the Revolver series of motors... Might do interesting things with the acoustics of the tone they emit. I'm wanting to experiment a bit.

I also went ahead and gave in to the urge... HH Puller Pro R 540-L 4100kv is on it's way, going in Bomber #1 - it's going to be heavily upgraded, the only plastics left are the cage, receiver box, and fuel cell. UD front and rear diff gears, SHV500 servo (no BEC!), 3S packs. It's the bouncer/racer...

Hoping I can get good use of the 2 very extreme (in their own way) motors installed in very different builds. As soon as I get them running and setup the way I want, I'll make the decision as to whether to just sell my 2200kv & 3500kv Puller Pros - I went a little hog-wild and will need to recoup some of the costs involved so far!

I really do have everything ordered, there are just a few items still in the mail - and I am waiting on production to complete on a set of LURC wheels to mount my LURC Hutchinson Command replica beadlock rings onto! (Limited Edition, 1 of 60 sets... I couldn't let them run out, so I already have those in hand...).

My peculiar, extremely delayed method of going about this build (now builds, plural!) has left me with loads of parts, I'm 99% certain I have enough to build both - but also I will have some parts I changed my mind on left over...

So, a classified ad or two will probably be coming up. Well, from one extreme to another - started with a kit - never built it, and now have more than 2!

I also need to finish my reworking of my K10 Ascender. at least I've driven that one! Got some Wiha drivers arriving tomorrow to allow me to properly tighten all the tiny bolts on the RC4WD Raceline wheels I got for it.

OK - I'll keep the thread updated as I have time - the worst thing about all this is it seems that I'm on the middle of a career change... so my spare time is in more limited supply.

Does Holmes still cover the motors when they are sold used?
Warranty / repairs?

Not 100% sure on that. Holmes has a really good history of servicing and performing warranty work, and their motors have a very low return rate. The only products that really had any issues were servos, and much of that was due to the hardness of the steel pin. They seem to be sorted now, as well.

How much power are your electronics pulling, that you need a external BEC on top of the 8 amp BEC that is built into the MambaX?

The ProModeler Servo runs best on 8.4v, and the ESC BEC falls a little short of that.

The other servo is a Holmes Hobbies SHV500 - rated for 3S direct, no BEC.

I also just got notified that my Brushless JX BLS-12V7146 46kg backup servo will be here in a couple of days - it's rated at 14.1v...

I found this nifty part to make the wiring super easy:

Gear Head RC JST In-Line Power Adapter - XT60

The lightweight Bomber will use the ProModeler, running off the BEC, BEC connected to the In-Line Power Adapter and the Mamba X on 4S power with a HH Revolver 1800kv motor.

The heavyweight Bomber will use the HH SHV500, running directly off the In-Line Power Adapter and the Mamba Monster X on 3S power with a HH Puller Pro R 540-L 4100kv motor.

I second the Gear Head unit. Run them in two of my rigs!

Curious to see how the Revolver motor will work out for you. I think Harley was running one in one of his scratch built rigs for a while, but I seem to remember he ended up moving away from it for some reason. (Too much useless information in my brain to remember the particulars)

I've watched some YouTube videos on Revolver-equipped rigs - and found them interesting and entertaining enough to make the jump... and they are not very pricey.

I'm at home, utterly exhausted, after finishing out my last days of the contract.

It got progressively worse towards the end because we had fewer and fewer employees each day handling the same amount of work, so I'm mentally and physically toasted...

Going to be trying to squeeze these 2 builds in with searching for a new position - gonna be a crazy ride for a while, I imagine.

The Ascender is mechanically done, but I do have a new body, paint, and a new cage with a bunch of scale accessories for it as well.
