Default Puller pro xl vs. pro4hd (or the new team brood?)

I keep overheating the pro4hd 3000 kv, and I'm looking for something that has at least as much power, hopefully more, and also has good low end control. The Holmes claims to not have great low end control and less smooth startup...
And I see the new team brood 550 sensored motor too....

The regular Puller Pro makes as much power as a Pro4HD so the 540XL would be in a class above the Pro4HD. I ran a 3500kv 540XL and it was entirely crawlable. Not ideal but it jut took a little more finger control. Setting expo on the remote helped a lot. Be aware, the 540XL makes wheelie popping, axle snapping, weak spot finding power so 3s is plenty torque. 4s would be hilariously brutal on parts. As far as the team broods, no one but testers have ran them yet and they're not talking so it's just a guess at this point. I'm sure they're good.

Cool, I'm already running the lowest gear ratio I could find, and all metal HD upgrades everywhere, but I don't want to break stuff, lol! I'm contemplating the 2000 kv, just to get as much low speed as I can. I do a lot of long (6 hour +) runs, with lots of low speed technical stuff, so low end smoothness is important. I have my expo dialed back and the throttle curve pretty deep as well, so I don't have a lot of room to adjust much more.

I recently switched from a Tekin Roc412 3100kv to a Holmes Puller Pro 3500kv 540xl. It was a big boost in power, and I love it. I run HD gears and spools front and rear, MIP shafts, and factory steel trans gears. I haven't had any breakages yet and have been running it pretty hard.

What are your temps anyway?

But if you're not looking for top end speed, drop down in kv and volt up those lipos. Go with the Holmes PP 2200kv on 4s and I think you'd be happy.

It's hard to get my temp gun in in the motor for a precise reading, but my finger says owie! Too hot to hold for more than a second. I asked HH about a 2000 kv and 4s and they seemed to imply it might be just as hot.

Is the low end just as smooth as the roc? Or even close?

Remove the side panel and get a good temp reading. I would be you're in the safe range even though it's too hot to hold your finger on. 120-150*F feels pretty darn hot to my finger but is well in the safe zone for motor temps.

This.

The finger test is basically meaningless when it comes to brushless motors. Most motors have safe operating temps up to 160* (or 180* for a short duration). Instantaneous skin burns occur at 162* so if your finger isn't blistering up after touching the motor then the temp is probably safe.

The tekin motors will run too hot if they are under geared as well. What pinion/spur are you running?

Agreed, the tekin is much smoother on the low end, and is a great motor I just prefer the big power in my bomber and moved the roc into my scx10.

What motor won't run hot if you mess up the gearing?

I didn't say any of them would. He's talking about his tekin so that's what I was referring to. He said he has the lowest ratio he could find. Adding a few teeth to the pinion might lower the temps.

Yes, exactly. It's a general rule for every motor that incorrect gearing can overheat it.

Or correct gearing and bad connections, binding, too much timing or several other things. I get it. Maybe the OP could use your help.

I am helping. That's why I clarified what you said.

So I'm running 11:56, everything in the drive train seems pretty smooth, no binding, a bit squeaky before I re-lubed the mips, and I got upper 160s after an hour or so of fairly steep, slow, technical crawling. I'm not running any timing or cheat, I am using smart sense, all of the wiring seems clean and solid, wet noodle, pretty thick gauge, castle connectors, etc. esc fan goes on and off, doesn't seem overly hot, either.
It is also a nice fall day here, not nearly as hot as a few weeks ago, I'm guessing the motor may have been hotter if it were 15* hotter out...

It may have but 160's is ok. I don't start to worry until I'm in the 180's. I also run 16/56 with that motor but it's in my yeti.
