Default Futur owner questions

Hi,
Im relatively new to the crawling RC world, I currently own a Yeti Jr rock racer (1/1 and I want to make the jump to 1/10.

I found a Bomber RR10 kit at my local Shop and I am about to pull the trigger.

I plan on buying a Traxxas 550 21T motor with a hobbywing 1080 ESC and a savox MG servo.

Is there anything I should upgrade on the kit while Im building it or just wait for things to break?

Thank you

The Bomber kit is the best Axial kit and the best bang for your buck. It comes with lots of upgrades and IMO it does not need any upgrades out of the box. Buy it, build it, have fun. Do not get the RTR. That needs lots of upgrades.

I cannot comment on other Axial products, but I agree to get the kit version. I had a RTR Bomber and needed to throw some $ at it:

Servo
BEC
Stainless links
Metal trailing arms

Go brushless to really make this truck come alive. Brushed will leave you disappointed.

I had my eyes on a brushless Holmes Hobbies setup but the price is very steep, even more in Canada with the poor dollar value.

It's the highest it's been in a year, do it now, or buy locally.

Been VERY happy with my hobbyking X-Car 80a brushless esc, and turnigy trackstar sensored brushless motor..... 78 bucks shipped for a brushless setup that has been better than any brushed setup i have ever had for crawling, and way more speed than any brushed setup i could put in the bomber.

I can't seem to find mention anywhere of a drag brake, which I need when crawling in my neck of the woods. Can you confirm it does/doesn't have drag brake capability?

Note that unless you get an expensive sensored system it will likely not be in any way water tolerant and it probably won't be anywhere as controllable (slow might not be 'that' slow even without cogging) or have a great drag brake (drag brakes can 'let go' if you tap fwd briefly with sensored and it can take a bit to recover unlike brushed systems which are instant) or instant fwd/rev.

The brushed setup you mentioned is excellent and it does about 20 km/h on 3S which whilst not that quick, is plenty for rock crawling and bouncing.

It's also totally waterproof and has excellent resolution, no cogging or any annoyances. Very cheap to replace motors too so you can feel confident playing boat or submarine. I personally would be paranoid about driving $500AUD of fancy sensored system underwater where a $100 brushed setup I'm happy to go underwater as a motor is probably $35 here to replace and they last ages anyway.

The RTR or kit will be totally reliable on this level or power. Goto a good brushless system and you can start spending though like Jato said, the kit is great and you probably just need alloy knuckles and C hubs to complete a solid truck; it is just a bit hard to get a kit atm.

You just need to decide if you want a fast, more expensive racer or a rock crawler/bouncer as the RR10 won't handle very well at 35mph with locked diffs, solid axles, drag brake and the high stance...it'll roll ALOT and will have some terrible crashes. IMO, as a crawler it's just not in any way setup for these speeds...the Titan setup rolls all the time if you aggro with it.

It's an excellent all round truck IMO. Possibly my favourite but sometimes it's better to have two trucks so you don't have to specialise so much...ie great crawler and a rock racer like a Yeti or Rock Rey etc.

The 2 speed is needed for a brushed Bomber if you're going to do extended slow crawling in warm weather though. I liked the brushed setup and 2 speed myself more than a Hobbywing sensored system.

Thank you for the input.

I guess my initial setup was about right for what I need. I have the Yeti Jr for rock racing, I can upgrade it since parts are cheap and it could be stupid fast on a mamba micro X brushless setup with 3s...

I want the Bomber to be slower and more crawler / trail.
Waterproof is a must so brushed it is. The titan 21T on 3s should be more that enough.

Down the line if I get really hooked on the hobby, I could convert it to B1B or even buy a 1/5 truck.

My friend has the Xmaxx on 6s and it's stupid fun...

So i'm going over the part list and getting close to buying my Bomber RR10 KIT.

One thing i overlooked is the transmitter. I know there is a combo with the Tactic TR325 and TTX300 but is thee any other good bang for buck combo i should look at ?
I heard of Flysky or even a Traxxas RX/TX but never really shopped around.

Thank you

The FlySky radios are nice and cheap and can be hacked to have 8ch's which is nice when adding lights, winches, 2spd, whatever. And the receivers are dirt cheap for adding more models.

Decided to go for simplicity and buy a Ttx300 / TR325 combo.

I also decided to take it slow and build this thing the right way. I will be expanding the budget and maybe even include a nice Holmes Hobby setup.

"futur me" can deal with the wife aggro

After much reading, here is my part list :
Bomber rr10 kit
Ttx300 / Tr325
VP stage 1 c-hubs and knuckles
Incision spool/locker x2
VP Rod ends
Incision motor mount
VP servo horn
VP wheel hexes
AR60 beef tubes (brass front, maybe aluminum rear)

I own a red mustang with white racing stripes. I wanted to do a throwback to my car by using a red and white theme on the Bomber.
Maybe red cage / white panels?
Or black cage / red panels with white Lines?

Thank you

Paint will eventually wear off much of the cage, I'd do the black cage and red/white graphic on panels. That list of parts is good, servo will need upgrade after a while. Links and trailing arms at some point, depending on how hard you run it - kit versions are soft. Incision links and SSD trailing arms are my recommendation on a budget.

Durok is totally right om the cage paint coming off. I painted my cage gold and it's pretty beat up now. I don't mind though, gives it some character. My panels have taken a beating too. Good luck with your build. Are you going to create a build thread?

I will try to take pictures for every step of the build. Your Goldmember build has been my inspiration!

I may throw in a set of incision links and CI foams too.
Do you guys use dual stage? Which type?

Thx
