Default Ax10 scx smt10 wraith etc transmission in a bomber

Has anyone done an AX10 SCX Wraith etc transmission conversion on their Bomber?

I am not interested in the 2 speed gearbox setup & it seems like a big waste of space & useless added weight so I would like to change over to the Wraith transmission

Does anyone have any details? will the stock length driveshafts work & is there any other mods needed apart from simply bolting in the transmission?

Found this Axial link with plenty of useful info too>

The idea came from one of CarterFab's builds but I have also seen the conversion skid plates that are available too>

I know it's a preferred mod by several - as the Wraith transmission is simpler and lighter. Betcha a search will turn up some info... (maybe I'll edit this useless response in a bit?)

Bomber trans options

Another newbie

2 Speed or not 2 Speed, that is the question.

Yes I did search but using the main key words just uncovers thousands of threads on useless stuff that doesnt relate

I did find a few other threads but some only vaguely mention the transmission swap & dont really give any details

1st thread I listed in my edit above, sir!

(just found it...)

gottorque has done this mod and likes it, he was just online and posting very recently - I'd maybe message him...

*Old* and Thechewmaster did the mod, too.

I did advanced search, "Bomber Wraith trans" as keywords, show posts not threads... have 290 posts to scroll through, a lot of which are not relevant, plenty are but give little or no detail, but I'm only on page 3 of 12 pages of results

Check out high altitude performance RC. He has a badass skid for the bomber. It includes the trans integrated into the skid. I have a build thread going on it. His skid cuts 141gr of weight if you use the light HR gears and the triad slipper or no slipper.

Yeah I saw your thread also Motorider, was hoping to see more pics of the trans fitted on the stock Bomber skid

Looks fairly easy, I think I will work it out

I have a wraith skid on my bomber, and had a wraith trans and 4 link rear, works totally fine. I recently put the rc4wd 2 speed so I could really gear down for super technical stuff.

I have a Wraith cased trans in my B1B, 1; because I had it, 2; because at the time DMG req'd the Wraith trans to clear the steer servo (I think it can be done with RR10 trans now)
Secondary advantage of Wraith over AX/SCX10 is the longer rear output allows use of MIP Yeti/RR10 rear shaft. Could make this work also with an extended SCX10 rear output.
Uses a basic adapter plate to pick up the original skid holes.

I run the DMG adapter. Quick and easy swap.

Have tried some different options. I built my RR10 from scratch out of parts I had laying around, mostly from a Wroncho.
Basically it started out as a RR10 chassis with Wraith everything. Upper shock mounts didn't align well with trailing arms because of the narrower skid mounts. Works better with regular 4 link rear and shocks mounted on axle. You can basically take a RTR Wraith and change just the chassis to RR10, skids are interchangeable.
I'm currently runnd DMG adapter with Wraith transmission on RR10 skid, MIP Yeti rear, stock length front, Vanquish Wraith upper and lower links, TRX 5525 rod ends rear upper links to accomodate longer wheelbase, RR10/Yeti trailingarms.

My current Bomber build started out as a brand new cage & I have slowly sourced all the parts to put it together>

Bomber built in oz!

CarterFab mentioned simply fitting the SCX transmission without an adapter plate, I might have to try that option first if I cant find an adapter plate

I have an as new stock SMT10 transmission to try out for now, I was looking at...admiring the SSD high ratio Wraith transmission & it mentions it needs some of the stock parts to complete the assembly, it is actually cheaper for me to purchase a complete new transmission with the needed parts rather than buying them individually so I will see how that goes for now then I will upgrade to the SSD ( SSD00016 ) transmission later on, it is a nice package with the motor mount etc included
I plan on buying an SSD centered rear diff also

Hey Guy's
Well I have been flat out with well everything else except life so my Bomber Wraith transmission conversion has been put aside for too long

Can someone post some pics of their wraith transmission setup's in a Bomber?

I decided to get back into it & did a rough mock up, looks like I will need some new / longer driveshafts
What options do I have for driveshafts? will I need to buy the SSD Hi Ratio transmission with the longer rear output or can I just change to longer outputs on the stock Axial SMT transmission I already have?

Pretty sure I had it all worked out before but I didnt write it down or anything
I have all the other needed goodies TX RX brushless motor etc sorted but I just need to get the drive from the transmission now to the front & rear axles

Plate is a simple 3mm (1/8") aluminium piece with 8 holes, 4 that pic up the stock Bomber skid holes at the rear & 4 for the Wraith trans ~12mm forward of the other set.

Don't need SSD trans, there are longer outputs available for the SCX/SMT trans, except Holmes is out of stock atm.

Got the transmission etc bolted in, played around with the stock Yeti & Bomber driveshafts I had laying round & found I could piece them together to find the correct length

Found this write up which shows some good pics & lists some of the goodies required>

Same, but I haven't got mine running, yet. Big winter project rebuild.

Stock receiver box interferes with pinion/spur gears. Say goodbye to that

In case you're wondering, it's a dig transmission.

Mine doesnt seem to clear the RX box so I had to cut it off

Have you tried fitting the spur gear yet?

Haven't tried putting any gears on it, yet. I'm probably going to cut the receiver box down and keep the bottom of it as a shelf to mount my ESC. I'm pretty sure a BR-XL will fit perfectly.

Yes re-word my reply...I cut the RX box down to a flat tray so it can all still be bolted together as it is meant to be, without that the frontend would have some serious flex or break off rather quickly

Im going for the maximum amount of weight reduction but keeping strength hopefully where it is needed

I have ordered the Holmes TorqueMaster Extended Axial Transmission Outdrive set so the front & rear outdrives will be extended
Also have a Billet Works Designs FOFF motor plate on the way which will hopefully eliminate any movement or flex at the motor / spur gear
