Default Breaking Hex Pins

Every other time out I am breaking Hex pins on my Vanquish VXD's. Anyone having a similar issue? Ideas on what I can use? I have ordered new hubs as the have some notching.

Are the axle’s holes a lot bigger than the pins you’re using? It could just be hammering them each time you stop and go hard.

There are those who have used cut-down drill bits... find something the same diameter that's hardened steel and cut to proper length?

IIRC, someone was using piano wire.

The Vanquish site states that they use std. Axial pins:

*** You will need to provide a hex cross pin for use with these axles (Axial Part AX30163)

But I've broken those just using stock Axial Universals and a 1800kv Revolver... (OK, it WAS on 4S...)

Could be the hex is worn and causing the issue, too.

Is it possible you're over tightening the axle nut and placing excess strain on the hex pin? I'm typically ham fisted and have a tendency to overtighten things. I've noticed I've actually bent some hex pins a bit by doing this, which would/will cause eventual failure/breakage. I've since moved to utilizing small lock washers to help keep the axle nut snug versus over tightening them.

Get some 5mm ID shims & put under the pin between it & the bearing so that once the wheel nut is tight there's just a whisker of in/out float on the stub axle.
My guess is currently your tightening the hex against the pin & theres clearance between the hex & the bearing, this allows big hits on the wheel to beat the hex on the pin & will break the pin.
With the shims in there the hex rides on the shim which in turn rides on the bearing, taking the force off the hex pin.

Make sure wheels are tight after runs maybe stop and check on longer runs.

I have been working on my rig and dropped that pin into the black hole we call the garage floor then i cut a drill bit or piano wire or anything that will fit snug.. Then weeks later when not looking for it there it is right in front of me....hate it when that happens
