Default My Bomber Build - RR10 Money Pit

Hello all,

Decided to start a thread on my bomber build. Walked into my LHS a few months back to buy Traxxas ID to XT60 connector adapters and this bomber caught my eye. Read something about the kit version being discontinued so I ended up picking it up out of curiosity. Never had a 2.2 only other rig is a TRX4 that I share with my two little boys (5 and 3).

It started off as any other RTR, bought a 2s battery charged it up, took it out and was underwhelmed, felt it was horribly slow but crawled decent around the yard. Was going to put it up for sale on offerup and just get something else. But I thought, what the hell, might as well start modding it. Big mistake

First thing I decided to upgrade was motor and esc setup, ended up picking up a Holmes Hobbies Puller Pro V2 2200kv and Mamba X. That fulfilled my itch but I wanted something a bit more punchy, so I ordered a a Puller Pro V2 Stubby 3300kv and ran that on 3S and it was great until my front driveshaft broke. Thats when it all snowballed, coupled with the recent Covid situation, my lack of self control has led to splurging.

Looks killer man! Nicely done and good write up

Those carbon panels and PowerStrokes set it off really well.

Curious why you chose the PP Stubby over the PP standard?

Thanks Davis! Only reason was the 3500kv and 2700kv PP V2 standard size was out of stock. I do still have the 2200kv standard that I might put back in. My MIP front driveshaft keeps coming apart, ordered a rebuild kit from supershafty, if it comes apart again I guess the 2200kv will go back in.

Default Hot Racing Rear Shock Mounts + EXO Radiator/DMG Mount

Installed Hot Racing Rear Shock Mounts. Main reason was to fit both the dual shock setup and the DMG/EXO Radiator and mount.

Thanks Doc!

Update for now, supershafty rebuild kit came in for the front MIP driveshafts and everything is rebuilt and seems sturdy. Bashed around a bit and did some hill climbs in the yard, holding strong.

Added some KNK stainless hardware to both the bomber and the TRX4. Will snap some pics and post this week.

What was causing the driveshaft to come apart? Everything properly cleaned and thread locked?
Anyways nice rig. Wish mine looked half as good.

It’s always the pin with the flat spot in the middle backing out and falling off somewhere getting lost. The coupler/barrel and even the set screw are still on or fall off but can be found. I know the set screw is supposed to hold the pin into place on that specific flat spot on the pin, but for some reason its not. I’m facing the flat spot to the threaded area of the barrel while screwing and thread locking the set screw.

Anyways this last rebuild has been working out fine, crossing my fingers hoping it holds up.

Thanks, I do love this build even with it gaining more and more scars every time I take it out.

Great looking truck! I can see why you named it the money pit.

Thanks Jato!

Update; My 2 month old REEFS 555 won’t turn left more than 25%. Turning right is still fine turns 100%. It can barely turn left now, even while adjusting endpoints on my radio, adjusting Mamba X voltage.

Update 2: Sent the servo back to REEFS for service. Will probably sell it once it comes back. Ordered a ProModeler DS630 for the bomber as a replacement.

You're welcome. Please keep us updated on that Reefs servo. I want to see if they'll stand good for it.

I got a call from REEFS and they mention everything is fine with the servo and its getting sent back. They tested it and could not find anything wrong with it. They mentioned it could be my radio or receiver that needs to be reset or rebinded. I will try test it out again when I get it back and I will also test the promodeler when I get that in.

ProModeler 630 is in and I'm happy with it, seems a bit quicker than the 555 and just as strong under load. ProModeler sent a bunch of swag and stickers which is always nice, shipping was quick, all in all I'm happy with their customer service.

As far as problems with the radio/receiver, I didn't find any. I installed the servo, rebinded my radio, plugged in my castlelink and double checked all the specs on the Mamba X. Once I did that and turned the bomber back on, full steering on the 630. Could it be the AVC wigging out on the Spektrum receiver while the 555 was in? No clue, but I will let everyone know how this new servo keeps performing. As far as the 555, I will test it out on my TRX4 when it comes back. I asked REEFS to write down that they personally tested it and everything performed fine during check up. Honestly, I do not know if I will be keeping it. If it does go, I will make sure it works fine on another car before selling it.

Took a few hard tumbles and the lightbar was damaged, will need to fix the wires up etc, lights are not turning on anymore. Added some window nets from RPP and some stainless hardware.

Some updated pics

That is sweet!

I was curious, though, is there a functional improvement having two shocks mounted? I imagine with faster vehicles you could manage heat a bit better, but that doesn't seem to be an issue here. It looks awesome for sure, I'm just curious if there is any major benefit to it outside of appearance and what it is.

Thanks Shinook. I honestly did all the mods at once so I did not get to drive it much stock and detail the benefits. I knew there were extra mounting holes for a dual shock setup, saw a few builds with them, liked the look and did them. I will say with the amount of speed this bomber has compared to stock it handles really well, doesn’t flip over much at speed unless Im totally hooning. Its very stable and has just enough dampening for my needs. Could it be the dual shock setup and the sway bar doing the job better, maybe? Either way, my background as a amateur yard racer wouldn’t be able to explain the benefits in any meaningful way lol.

Cool, thanks for the info.

I have seen a few other rigs with dual shocks and was curious if there is any functional benefit to it. It seems like you could achieve the same damping performance with a single damper and thicker oils. I was curious if there is any real performance benefit for RC.

Certainly looks awesome, though!
