could i stick on 2.2s on there and be ok? what mods would i have to do do it to make it work?

2.2 wheels and tires will work fine. You may need to cut the body a little more to get them to fit though.

I read somewhere that it would rub on the front left side?

It really depends on what offset wheels you run. The Axial 2.2 wheels should fit fine though.
