Default New to most of this......

Hey everyone, new to the electric RCs and Rock Crawlers. I just purchased an SCX10 from Tower Hobbie (on back order but sweet deal!) and still waiting for it. I know it doesn't come with electronics so I have been gradually getting what I need. I plan on making this more of a mudder and crawler. Got the idea from RC Car Action Jan 09.
Traxxas waterproof servo 2056
Traxxas waterproof receiver box
Traxxas XL-5 ESC waterproof
Axial 27T and 55T motor

What I need to know is what battery should I use? I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to Lipos but I hear tons about them. I know they are not cheap, neither is the charger for them. I don't plan on competing with this, just some back yard mudding, snow and trail fun. So if you all have any suggestions on a good batter and charger combo, doesn't have to be Lipo, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks again!

Oh, and for those who now own the SCX10.....how do you like it? I'm a little overly excited to get mine!!!

With that ESC you can run a 2c (2 cell) lipo at 7.4volts. OR you can go the somewhat cheaper rout and just get some standard 6-cell 7.2v Nimh packs. It's really up to what you want, and what you might want in the future. If you continue in the RC field and want faster cars, Lipo's will be the way to go. But if you don't see yourself doing much more later, the regular batteries should be sufficient.

i read that article also and actually went that route, but save yourself the hassle of having to replace that traxxas servo like i did, they just dont seem to hold up to rock crawling. im sure they may be replies to say that they have had luck, but i am a die hard fan of the hitec 645, and it doesnt take a whole lot to waterproof it if that is your concern. i wasnt even abusing the servo and the gears stripped out. the waterproof receiver box is a nice addition, really clean and does the job very well. you may even look into an lrp speed control, they make several that are waterproof, and i have had good luck with those. my rooster got the tiniest bit of water on it and went up in magical blue smoke. still have a couple but i dont even chance them getting wet.

good luck and enjoy it
