Thumbs up Pea-Ta's SCX 10

Hey everyone Id like to first start off by saying great forum and great builds. This is the site that convinced me to get an scx 10. I'm going to refer to other build threads to get ideas for my own scx. I'm still on the fence on what body to get the diablo body is catching my eye at the moment but I would like something more scale.... Im gonna head down to target, walmart etc to see if I can grab someting.

Some pics of the first run.

Over all i'm very impressed with the quality and performance of the scx10. I know I will have to do some suspension tuning to have it perform the way I want it to. But, for now, I will leave it be.

Love the brushless, Its a mamba max 5700 geared 87 14 (stock) It's not as fast as I thought or want it to be but a few extra gears up on the pinion will be able to fix that; I have lots of torque to spare.

The programing on the mamba is
25% brake
50% reverse
0% punch control
0% drag break
high start power
lowest timing

Linear throttle and brake.

First Vid: some water/mud

I'll see if I can get some vids of some trails.

do you experience any cogging with that motor esc combo at slow speeds, or crawling ?

I have no cogging. I attribute this to the "high start power" and the low gearing. There was minimal cogging when the esc was set to "low start power" but now It feels as smooth as a brushed motor. I will keep everyone updated as to how it performs when I start gearing it up.

I ran a 7.4v 3000 mah battery threw it and the motor was barely above ambiant temperature and the esc was about the same. I'm gonna pick up a 16 tooth pinion tomorrow and see how that does.

Is the mamba max waterproof?

I have one sitting around and would like to use it, but i like going in the water to much and wasn't sure on it's waterproof-ness.

About 20 min of crawling (20% throttle) and 15 min of full speed trails.

Its water resistant, I've splashed it a couple times (including in my vid) and no damage yet. the way I mounted it I have the usb port down and taped up with electrical tape. I also ran some ca glue along where the pc board meets the case.

Why do you use lowest timing? What difference does it make? I have no clue about this timing shit..

Thanks crunky and thanks for the links.

@ fastolsen Timing on a BL motor is kinda like a brushed, the higher the timing the more amps it draws meaning more power, however, more heat is generated. As for my setup, I haven't ran it through it's paces yet so I like to keep things cool and work my way up. Timing does not really matter too much if you are running nicd/nimh. Once you start running higher end lipo's you will see a big difference when you adjust timing.

Just picked up a 16 tooth losi pinion and installing later...

Went to the park by my house to mess around. ran It on the slash track we setup, It took the jumps very well. After about 15 min of that I started crawling. The truck performed well but I was not getting enough traction, I would get half way up and then I would spin all fours.

Is it possable to have too much torque?

i would b interested in a video showing it running wide open, i have a 13.5 turn brushless novak setup in mine, but surely yours would be much faster than mine. any chance of posting up a video? thanks

I have the same setup I could install in my scx I just built yesterday and am curious in seeing a full speed and crawling video.

By linear throttle curve do you mean straight from bottom to top at a 45* angle or straight across from left to right????

@ ajcloud: I'll see if I can do a vid tomorrow, I have to work on some bugs at the moment with the esc. I'll explain further down.

@ gta3wheeler: A 45 degree incline from left to right.

So while I was out testing the 16T pinion, I rolled the truck and demolished my servo. It was my traxxas servo that I pulled from my slash. So not much of a loss there. Now I have a HS-645MG.

Once I put the 16T into my rig It wasn't going much faster so I started investigating. turns out I forgot to tighten my slipper after I installed the wheels on it. Now it's fast. I am getting slight cogging when crawling at very low speeds so I'm still working that out. I ether have to adjst the throttle curve or advance timing. I'll see which works best.

I got some testing in yesterday after school. I also got some vids. I tried to edit them together but my computer was not wanting to listen so I just uploaded some raw vids.

Speed test:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49rYHcz1qdc

Jumping/crawling:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQkByXtkFH4

Bashing/ Crawling:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnnTE4VFT0M

In summary of yesterdays testing, speed seems to be up to the range to where I want it, but low speed torque I still need to tune. It only coggs a little but it's still too much for me. I'm gonna pick up a 15 T pinion the net time I'm down at the LHS; also, I'm gonna bump up the timing a little bit to give me a little more punch. 11.1v is also in the future.

Now I have a problem. I need to extend the wheel base of my rig which I can do by getting longer links but what is the recommended way of doing this? I need to extend about 1 inch.

You can't add too much to the front without running into clearance issues with the servo. But you can add quite a bit to the back.

We used the following parts front and rear to extend the wheelbase to 12" (305mm).

AX30518 Threaded Aluminum Pipe 6x98mm - Grey for the lower links.
AXA1418 6x6mm Spacer - Grey for the upper link.

We also offer the grey links, posts, and spacers in different lengths so you can fine tune the length to exactly what you need. All the part info is below:

Sweet! Thanks =)

Edit:

So I need the wheel base to be close to 13 in, 330mm..... I think I will only be able to extend the rear due to servo clearance issues.

If I put the 106mm links in the rear it will give me 305mm..... If I do both I will get 320mm which I can live with....

If I mount the servo to the frame, will I still have clearance issues in the front?
