Default dpdsurf's SCX-10 Hilux

I made the mistake of stopping by Jake's Perfomance Hobbies this past Wednesday because I had no intention of getting one of these anytime soon. But as I thought, I am so stoked that I did. I put a little over an hour into it last night and it's been a simple build so far. Of course I had head start.

After seeing badger's photos I am a little embarassed to post mine. Showoff!

SETUP:
- R2D Tranny
- Team Brood 35T Handwound Motor
- SR3100 RX
- Novak Goat ESC
- Overbuilt axles
- Thunder Power 11.1v 3S 2000mah Lipo

I had some built Axial axles laying around so I decided to use them. They have the RCP Stainless Steel lockers inside. And of course the STRC aluminum goodies (wish I would have gotten black now).

I also had a R2D transmission laying around. I wanted to have a 2WD option so I hooked the dig up on the front instead the rear for rear dig, though I really won't use the rear dig. Just the freewheel option so I can switch to rear wheel drive only and do a bunch of stupid donuts or something like that. I had to grind a little material out from the inside of the skid and on the dust cover. After that it was a nice tight fit.

I like how axial included metal yokes, but I have never had good results with their drive shafts. So I used some pede shafts that I had on hand.

Have not fully decided on a body yet, I have a new Hilux body laying around that I may use. But I would prefer polycarb/lexan because I want this truck to lean more to the performance side than scale side.

More to come...

how did you actually mount the tranny to the skid? I've been wondering how well a R2 might fit inside of that chassis.

I think I'm going to start with a Tamiya 540 motor that I have because I believe they are 27 turns. I want the motor speed for starters. I'll be using a 3S lipo too.

4 new holes in the skid to align with the R2D. It wants to sit up higher on the axial tranny mount side so I added some washers between the skid and tranny on the other side to even it out. Not much material needed to be removed from the skid. It's a solid fit that I have 0 reservations about.

Well the Tamiya motor won't fit without moving the electronics box. So I'm going to use my 35T handwound for now. I don't know how well this 2WD will really work or even be worth it without some serious wheel speed. Good luck with yours.

I wasn't too excited about all those extra plastic pieces for the battery tray. So I just directly attached it to the rear mount and drilled a hole in the chassis brace up front to mount it direct. It holds my ESC and battery. The ESC won't fit up front because of the motor.

Lookin good! I was also going to run the disconnect to the front wheels (Dewmerz idea, not mine) but the DNA dig interferes with the upper link mount on the frame. :-( So no dig for me.

What color are you going to paint the yota?

Thanks Ken.

I'm still not sure if I'm going to run a yota body. BUt if I do, I'm going to paint it white. Based on my experience with hard bodies I don't like it when the paint scrapes off and you see white underneath. So if I paint it white, they won't stand out the same. I just finished with the 1st coat on the stock body and will probably run that a few times first.

Can the goat ESC handle a 3s lipo? I know the novak crawler cant... Might want to check before it looks like your scaler is going up in smoke

Funny you should ask. Yes it can (could) handle it just fine even though Novak says 7.4 max. I had been using it with a 3S on my scaler for months. Then today, I decided to get my disconnect setup. Added auxilary servo, pluged in battery, crack. Bye bye goat

I'm in the middle of putting a Mamba Max from my Slash in it now.

Hey Dave, have you hooked a servo up to your dig yet? I got my R2D mounted in mine with a .25" adapter plate I made, but I'm trying to figure out how to mount the linkage. They put the shaft so close to the driveshaft output. Guess I'll look up some R2D threads.

I still can't believe how capable your SCX was.

Cool looking truck, I am going to do the same 2wd/4wd with a reversed dig with a Hot Racing tranny.

Yeah these perform great!!! I have not hooked up the dig yet. This is a pic from RC4WD's site, I was going to do something simiar but just make my own plate with 1/8" Delrin.

Any updates on the hardbody? I want to do the same thing. I was thinking of doing a crawler theme scaler and get the new Proline bumpers. How close does the grill get to the front frame crossmember? Could you do a front facing pic? I love this truck btw!!!!
