Default Up and Over's SCX-10 Scale Thread

Up and Over's Trail Rig Thread-

So I recently picked up a SCX-10 TR. I just put alot of energy into building a Losi Comp Crawler, so I was looking for something simple that could ease me into the scale building world without starting from scratch.

I am having so much fun with this TR as my first trail rig. In retrospec getting this TR was a good move as it has slowly helped me understand how trail rigs work and has inspired me to want to do all the building on my next rig from scratch.

I am slowly modding this one trying to add a more scale look. These trail rigs are very diffent than comp crawlers and much more involved, which is cool.

Since this TR is based on a LandRover Defender 90, I have been looking at the 1:1 size Defenders and trying to beef up the scale look. I started with some steel wheels and bigger Rok Lok tires, which helps alot. I also am putting in a Rooster Crawler and have also put in aluminum steering links.
I have parts on the way and alot more scale work to do, but this is where I'm at. This truck is so much fun.

Just a 3racing winch. I need some decals for it. I'm surprised how strong the motor in the winch is for the price of the system. works great.

depends what you're looking for... on ebay i saw landrover logo decals...but if you are after a grill and headlamp decals you wont find new...i had contacted hpi to check if i can get hold of a separate d90 decal sheet without the body and they told me they dont sell them on their own. For mine i made my own grill and used what was left of my hpi decal sheet from my previous body.

Some scale tips. I have 3 scalers and the one thing that always makes a truck more scale is lights. I know the TR comes with lights but if you moved or added more so there were lights where the headlight stickers are and tail light stickers are it makes it look better. Also a driver! get a action figure and start hacking it up!

RC4WD sells a nice scale lighting kit that has brake lights, and working turn signals.

I would also consider painting the out side of the body a different color to give it a more scale look.

You could also put your own body on it and then build your own interior.

here is a shot of my SCX-10 kit

here is a shot of my AX10 conveted to X-trail scaler FJ40 (it has lights now but not in this picture)

Nice pics man. What do folks usually use for painting the outside of a scale rig body. Is there a suggested type or brand of paint that wears well and fades over time to look more scale? Will any polycarbon/ lexan type paint work or do people use something else?
All suggestions are welcome...

you can use any paint, just make sure the lexan is prepped well before painting. Great primer to look into is Bulldog. If you lay that down first, any paint will stick to that stuff.

I think Grimgard was suggesting painting the outside of an already painted body. Is this what you were thinking.
Is there a special way to prep the outside of a rig or are you referring to the ussual way of preping and painting a clear lexan body on the inside?

Just unscrew the lights and those 2 hole line up with the winch holes. Use the longer screws in the winch pac in place of the screws you must remove from the winch that line up with the light mount holes.

You can use any PS paint. I would lightly scuff up the body then wash it in soapy water before painting. If your looking for scale beat up truck look then any color in flat will work.

Update-

Recently put in a metal wire winch line and hook combo from TattooKenny. He is great to do business with and makes some great quality products. I also installed a bad ass exhaust pipe system.
I took this baby out on the rock yesterday and did a little hill climb with some nice trail action. So much fun and the 1.9 Rok Loks hook up the traction well. Enjoy the pics and let me know if you guys have any suggestions about the rig. Still have alot of work to do.

i would suggest 2 take off that dual muffler:? it looks like it belongs on a import drifter (esp with the burnt tip look), not a rock crawler/scaler! maby if u put 2 flat black straight pipes stickin out the back will look way better!

That's funny because the exhaust is from a drifter, and it got ripped off the bottom of the rig after about 2 minutes of crawling so it's already off and taken care of.

Is anyone running a rooster crawler with the stock 27 turn motor. Does the drag brake become less strong when using a lower turn motor? I'm running a rooster and on flat ground it will halt to a stop imediately but on steep climbing it will not hold completely and cant hold itself on a steep incline. I'm running a 2 cell lipo setup and using the stock SCX motor. Maybe my rig is getting heavy.

Anyone else experiencing this? Does a lower turn motor effect drag brake performance?

I have noticed on my rigs that the lower turn motor does effect the drag brake, but more so with a cheaper motor. I good hand would motor with the same turns, will hold better. And you are correct, that the more the rig weighs, the worse the drag brake.

Very nice looking rig. The pictures you took are awesome . That looks like a real cool place to run scalers.

I run a Novak ESC rooster crawler, 45T Novak, and it can hold most inclines. If you bought a new motor (they are cheap even the good ones $30.00) it would make a world of difference. My rig is very heavy and the more stuff you add the harder it is for your brake ot hold the truck. I prefer not having 100% drag brake because it lets you slowly go down hill with out having the drag brake slmming on every time you let off the throttle.
