Default Disappointed

Got my electronics in and spent all night soldering just to find out the set screw won't catch threads on the pinion. Can't get the pinion to seat on the motor shaft Anybody else run into this problem?

You mean the threads are stripped on the set screw or in the pinion? Just go buy or order some new ones....They don't really cost that much. Hope you don't live in the boonies.

You can also check to see if there is crusty thread lock on the threads that will clean off. Sometimes I have to take a little screwdriver and chip that shit off. Not likely with a brand new one though. Check for burrs that can be removed as well...

I always use a tiny drop of blue thread lock on the set screw to keep it from coming off. You might as well buy some of that too. Its good cheap insurance(Don't use red and for god sakes don't use green. You want the screw to come back out).

Good Luck,

JB

I tried 5 different set screws. I believe it is the threads in the pinion itself. I think they are cut too deep. The set screw won't catch until it is deep in the pinion (i set it with the pinion off the motor shaft and the set screw was way to deep by the time it caught threads) No way to set the screw while the pinion is on the motor shaft Guess I will be ordering another one unless my Hobbytown has one in stock.

Same thing happened to me. It was the last thing for me to screw on and I was like wtf, when threading on the pinion stripped out. Went to the LHS and got a pinion for under 4 bucks!

Does the 16 tooth pinion give it more speed or torque?

More teeth on the pinion equals more wheel speed, less teeth less wheel speed more torque. If your running a 27t motor the 14t is ok at least for me.

you could drill and tap the pinion for m3 screws. Thats what I do on mine when I can't find a proper set screw.

I'm running a 45t so maybe i will go up to a 16 tooth pinion.

Soldering that Tekin ESC was a PITA. Atleast for me. So dang small!

What are some aftermarket pinions that would fit the SCX-10?

HPI?

This happened to me on my Honcho.

It was definately the pinion and not the set screw.

Luckily I had my AX10 to rob the pinion from to get it going for now until I get another one.

Same thing happened to me. It's like Axial made them out of pot metal or something. I ended up buying a 3 pack of 48p pinions from Tower. I got a 13t, 14t and a 15 or 16t

The pinions from Robinson racing are threaded 4-40. The Axial ones are 3mm. If you have a 3x3 screw it should work. I used a Robinson steel one. I had three of them laying around that I forgot about, all new.

Thats not the right pinion. You will want a 48 pitch (48P) pinion with a .125" hole. A steel pinion is fine but there are aluminum pinions and some other plated and/or hardened versions. Up to you what you want to spend, I'd just buy the cheap steel ones until you figure out what gearing you want then you can get better ones if you want.
