Default TR plus about $300 makes a NICE toy truck

I'm brand new to the scale version of this affliction...
I got the SCX10 TR and played with it for a week and decided to do some upgrades.

Added Spektrum DX3E 2.4Ghz radio - great improvement

Added Tekin FXR with 35T motor. - H U G E improvement... braking, great low speed control. Reverse works (unlike the stock radio). And, the 35T preserves wheel speed.

Added JR high torque steering servo. - H U G E improvement. full steering control, fast, and strong.

I also learned that a cheap soldering iron is a waste. 60 watt min. is a requirement.

So, for others about to leap in as I did... consider this a $500 - $700 toy if you really want a superbly handling scaler.

This thing now a joy to drive... now if I can just find some rocks here in S. Florida.... Why did I buy this again???? Oh yeah, cause I'm an offroad addict!

Sounds good. I'm waiting for a boat to bring my TR to the UK. The whole country seems to have sold out of everything but the SCX10 kit.

Just a Q about the Spektrum radio you picked up, does the 3rd channel on it have 3 positions? I am thinking of this radio to operate a winch.

Default About the Spektrum

Yes, the third channel operates either as two position, three position, or continuous... your choice.
It's a great radio and here in the states it's $99.00.... a very reasonable price.
The difference between the stock AM radio and the DSM is instantly obvious.

Welcome to the SCX 10 club! You're gonna love it!

Never been a big fan of the feel of the AX transmitter. I've got sveral Traxxas TQ's and a Futaba 3pm FASST. The 2.4 gig is awesome, but it won't run a winch easily. I'm currently torn between the DX3R and the DX3E. Price wise, the E version is fantastic. I will only be using this radio with the TR, not on multiple trucks, so it looks like a good choice.

the scx10 TR is a great base to start with for a good rtr scaler, and there are several bodies that fit it if you do some searches to find them. and the tr comes with 2 different link sets for different wheel base lengths.

Not to sound like a d-bag, but do you know how to work a screwdriver? and follow directions?
To build an RC car is a huge joy, from a pile of parts to a functioning model is an awsome feeling.. when it was new I put together a first gen Clodbuster.. and let me tell you that was before the internet, and message boards such as this.. so there was minimal help avalible..
Also Building a kit will give you the knowledge to repair and modify your crawler..
All I can say is give it a try.. all you can do is mix something up, and have to go back and redo it.. but I guarantee once you build it you will feel a real sense of pride the first time it moves on its own power...

You would still have to add a radio and receiver, but you can pick up a traxxas tq2 or 3 for next to nothing, you are alos looking at a servo, ESC and battery, a set of allen wrenches in smaller sizes is all you really need if you dont have them, and a couple screw drivers... If there are any crawling clubs in your area, check them out as well, most guys re more than happy to help someone out, especially a newbie that is putting together their first rig.. but if it is something that truely intimidates you or you dont feel you have the skill yet then by all means go rtr, and modify it from there..
Good luck, and welcome to the hobby!

Not to clutter your thread anymore, but since its already been mentioned i'll ask a similiar question. I have a TR as well and am wanting to put a winch on it, well, for the hell of it and was wondering what radio, cheapest preferably would operate it. Just read a thread about 3 & 4 ch radios with 2-3 different positions and that's what confuses me. How many positions would I need to operate a winch? I think I saw where there's a 4-ch Traxxas and I'm guessing that may be my cheapest option??

Thanks for the info!

Its simple, you need a 3 or 4 channel radio that has a 3 position switch on the 3rd of 4th channel. you can get a tq3 and mod the 3rd channel with said switch. but if you don't feel capable to do that, then go save $100 and buy a spektrum DX3E it has a 3 position 3rd channel and is far more reliable. i am getting one today and plan on selling my tq3. hope that helped

Default honcho

The honcho is longer than the scxtr versions. So it will be more stable. Also if you go to axial racing the just released the honcho in a rtr version with all plastic links. SO if you dont want to assemble one their is your best option. If you are looking to do hop ups on your scx buy the kit it comes with all the links and steering in aluminum then you can put the motor, esc, and electronics in it that you want. Take it from someone with the tr version i was disappointed in the electronics. So i should have bought the kit.

I can agree with that, but I got a good deal on my tr so I couldn't say no. So far my tr has a whole new body, a dx3e radio, traxxas xl5 w.p. Esc and a hitec hs654mg servo and dna assassin wheels that r weighted
