Default Shock length?

assembled the shocks for my Honcho last night & at the step where you add oil, it shows a diagram of the shock, the parts are shown out of scale but the total length is right and is listed as 72.5 mm. My shocks are a good 10mm longer than that & I don't see anyway they could be made shorter. Looking at the instructions, it's hard to imagine what I could have done wrong, anyone have some insight? Normally, I would take them apart & but I think they are right & don't want to drain my oil, etc.

As long as they are working correctly you are good to go. Just make sure they travel all the way up and down. If they do not compress all the way, then there is a little too much oil in them. If they make a squish when compressing, then they have to little oil. If you want to make them shorter, you can put a spacer of sorts on the shaft inside the shock body. This will keep them from extending as far. There are some spacers in the kit you can use or many people use nitro rc fuel tubing as well. It is pliable and easy to cut to whatever length you may need.

maybe the pic shows a fully compressed shock without the bumpstop
and your shocks may have the rubber bumpstop installed and is about 10mm long.

They do seem to be working correctly. I don't neccessarily want to make them shorter, just a little confused as to why they are longer than what the instructions say.

That's kind of what I was thinking. I can compress them to that length with the bumpstops on. I guess I'll run with it & see how they fit and if they are too long, I'll go back & take them apart.

Thanks.

longer shocks is what you want If you want some more articulation / flex.

I used traxxas rod-ends that are 5mm longer then the axial rod-ends just to make my honcho flex a little bit more

I also left the bumpstops out. for that same reason

I was just questioning the instructions or... my ability to follow them.

just checked the stock shocks and manual. Mine are 3 3/4 inch when measured as in the directions. Not sure where they got 72.5 mm. That equates to aprox 3 inches???

Thanks for confirming that, that's about what mine are. I could see how they could fit together any differently to come up with 72.5 mm.

This is what I want to do. What shocks did you use? Length? Do you by chance have the part numbers for the Traxxas stuff you used?

Thanks

I just used the stock honcho shocks.
I used traxxas slash rod-ends I had in my spareparts bin. I dont recall the partnumber. but those rod-ends are a few milimeters longer compared to axial ones

what I did on my stock honcho axial shocks:

traxxas slash rod-ends
left the rubber bumpstops out
20wt oil ( just a little bit for lubrication
swapped the green medium springs for red supersoft
I also backed out the rod-ends a bit so you can see a little bit of thread on the shockshafts.

these mods just give my honcho a little bit more flex and a smooth ride

I'll update at the end of my build but I think the instructions are wrong. I always build stock then mod. just my way, to each his own. great truck though. I am a Tamiya guy at heart and miss the complicated assembly & super detailed instructions.
