Default Rear axle chatter?

Im having troubles with my rear axle. When ever it gets in a bind it just skips and chatters.. I dont know how the gears could be worn down already.. Its less than a year old..

Where can i buy the rear gears? Tower doesnt carry them. I assume id just need a diff gear and the pinion gear?

oh haha, well I was glad to be of help, sorry if I sounded a bit like a D-Bag.

before ordering it up, maybe dissasembling the rear housing and inspecting the gears would be a good idea, just find out whats damaged if anything before buying something you may not even need.

i looked at the gears. they dont seem to be stripped. or worn.. but i dont know what else it could be.. i guess ill buy them anyway.

I cant get the knuckle off the little shaft that goes into the axle because the set screw is stripped.

another question......... why is there so much play with the spur gear?

Let me make this harder (or easier) for you. I can't tell you which ones to get, but I'll just say you might want to do some reading on overdrive/underdrive gears. By spinning the front axle faster, it should climb better and turn better. You can speed up the front, or slow down the back, or do both.

I THINK the 38/13 is stock. That last link you posted just says "metal", not sure if that's steel or not, but it's stock ratio.

axial steel gear sets....
ax30401 - 36/14
ax30402 - 43/13

im not worried about the gear ratio themselves.. These are HD ones compared to the one posted earlier in the thread. So these are the same gears except hd so they should fit..

I'm just wondering whether it might be one of the main drive axles that goes from the diff to the wheel. I don't own an SCX but I think they work on a square drive up at the diff. One may have rounded out. Just a thought.

Take it apart, and put up pics of it all, sounds like an interesting problem for sure if there is no visible damage.

The pinion looks hammered. I would replace the R&P, clean up the carrier, replace bearings, and clean the crud out of the entire thing. Looks like its seen it's day

I would also grease it back up, maybe even seal the holes on the top of the axle so you can still play in the mud/water.

Those parts look correct. Have you decided about staying the same or going over or under drive??

Don't forget to order some bearings too.

Didn't see this thread until now, I'd have gave you a new set of gears if you had came by the Box today. On bearings your best bet is to get a ten pack of 11x15's and another or two of 5x11's. I saw a set of the HD gears hanging at southside hobbyclown today, didn't look if they were OD or UD though. A UD set for the rear would be your best bet.
