All of the above answers will help with keeping water out, but it will still find its way in thru the pinion and axle bearings. Ask me how I know

This is what I did to mine. I used bearing grease from Lowes. Works very well and actually keeps water completely out. Of course my issue was dirt and debris more than water, but this works well for both. The outer grease next to the straight axle adapters and c's get's very dirty but the inner stays clean and dry. Have had this setup for a couple of months now with great success. It also keeps the bearings from getting corroded and locking up.

As others have said it will work but keep in mind you will get some water inside so you might want to check for rust.

im going to be putting new overdrive gears in the front axle today so if the gears are a little rusty thats cool they'll be coming out anyways. thanks for the input.

well what i used is redline marine grease! is supposed to be water proof or something. i packed the diffs so when i closed the diff up it shot out of every crevis. then use the set screws the same ones from the pinion gears.
for all 4 holes on both axels either way you will rust the bearings..
