Dingo Based Scaler: "The Steelhead".

We'll, I finally got a Dingo kit, and began building my scale truck. And I can finally post a build here on this forum.

Now the dam build is the only thing that is on my mind (Gotta post in the truck addiction thread).

First thing was to strip the chassis from it's paint, and sand it up good for brazing. Made links, 4-link trusses, bumpers and shock towers.

Scored some cool shocks, by a surprise birthday present, and it's rock'n some GCM 8-hole bead-locks:

I'm waiting for some parts to come in, so the build is on hold until. Next will be the servo & front body mount, a mount for the GRU & motor; and of course, the patiently waited for Dinky Split Skid.

Cage work is planned, but construction of the body must be done first.

Feel free to add ideas. It will be an FJ40 variant.

Looks awesome so far man. The bumper and shock mounts look sick. Subscribed

Thanx. I just had an appointment cancel, so I'm off to the shop to cut & file the servo / Ft. body mount pieces. Gonna try to have them brazed on today.

Ya, they came out nice. These were my first attempts:

After the 5th one, I thought of square tube ones instead. So I scapped the firsts.

Got the servo / body mount started. I wil braze it in, the next chance I get at it:

WOW! That fab work is pretty slick!

Got a little more progress made.

Side guards are done. It was hard as hell putting the mesh on. I made 3 in total; one is in the garbage, as I learned what too much heat will do to the mesh.

Check'em:

Thanx.

Do it. Parts turn out so solid-feeling.

And don't let it get to ya if ya mess up a part-attempt. It's all learning.

Incredible. I honestly did not know that people did this. There is a 1:1 crawler fab shop by my house and it's like I'm looking in their garage...

I'll have to look into getting a torch setup. I need a scoll or band saw or something as well to do the cutting and a vice to clamp parts into for bending etc, I have a belt sander and drill press etc for the rest of the fab work.

I'll have to see if the wife will let me buy more toys, lol. :lmao:

I know what you mean dude. I need so much steel working equipement too. Been thinking of building a steel bicycle as well, but jigs, cutters, alignment-tools...man it never ends.

Any hoo, Got the winch bolted down and GRU mounted in.

That big Hitec steering servo is next to get. Everywhere I read is, "Get it, and don't look back". Makes sense to me.:ror:

That's the most custom scx10 frame I've ever seen! Good work "thumbsup"

Thanx.

But you should see some of the frames, on the builds that have inspired me.

I've been reading up about how to build a lugged steel bike frame. It would make a good winter project. Anyway... nice fab work on the chassis. That GRU mount is neat.

Re: Dingo Based Scaler: "The Steelhead".

Dude. Me too. I wish I could afford a custom stainless lugged "Steelman" crossbike, but....

You read the "Paterek Manual"?

Yeah, I wish I could afford nice stuff, but my Pake C'mute does what it needs to do for now. I haven't read that, but I did read "Lugged Bicycle Frame Construction for the First Time Builder." The guy shows you how to build a lugged frame with rudimentary jigs and tools. How good would the frame actually turn out? Unsure of that.

nigelpheron 03-18-2012 07:31 PM

Re: Dingo Based Scaler: "The Steelhead".

Thanx Die-Laughing.

@ pardonmynoob; I like the Pake's, but they just don't make what I'm looking for. The only way to get exactly what your looking for, is to make it yourself.

As for how a frame would turn out? That book I mentioned said if you were going to do it for a living, you'll be credible after 25-frames.
