Default How to: Dingo underbody

I just finished up my SCX10 Dingo build with a Jeep Cherokee body. Since I went straight to the XJ body, and never messed with the Dingo body, I figured I would make good use of it. I'm very pleased with how it turned out, so I thought I would share...

Start by painting your dingo body whatever color you choose. I went with a matte gray to attempt to replicate the gray interior of my 1:1 XJ. Also, since I have the windows tinted on my scaler, I wanted something a bit lighter. If they were clear, I probably would have gone a darker gray or black.

After your paint is dried, trim the body to fit your XJ. The Dingo body is a bit long in the front, so you'll have to trim the hood back.

Trim the edges of the body just below the lower door hinge.

Cut the front and rear quarter panels along the top line of the body, and the rear straight across the top of the tailgate.

If you are using the dingo fenders like I am, you will have to trim the hood a bit narrower to fit between the fender backing.

Place strips of duct tape or gorilla tape along the inside of XJ doors and hood where underbody will attach

Place adhesive Velcro on the tape. The tape is to make sure that if the Velcro does peel, it will not damage the paint on your body.

Next position the under body where you want it and tape it on place

Mark where the bottom of the under body is on the inside of the body and measure the distance to the center of the Velcro

Measure from the bottom of the unde body, and place Velcro on the outside to match the inside of the Jeep body

Finally, mount the under body to the chassis

Lastly, flex the body slightly and slide it over the under body, then press the Velcro together

The result: no visible body mount posts, and a sweet interior to hide all the SCX10 guts..

Oh I forgot to mention, make sure the body is either taped or velcroed to the underbody before you mark and drill the mount holes just to make sure the whole thing lines up properly with your frame.

I also added another piece of tape under the hood to make sure the posts don't rub through my paint.

Thanks for all the comments! It looks even better in person. It's kinda tough to get good pics through tinted lexan windows.

I've got a few more trim details I'm working on... Will post some fresh pics in my build thread soon...

Love it! Helped me make my mind up as far as what body I'm going to run on mine as well. '73 Ford Bronco. (the newest one from Pro-Line; not the roll-bar version)

Nice how to!

I've used the Dingo interior a couple times now, first in my daughters Honcho and then in my C2 Cheropile Cherokee that I'm running in Sept at the NWSC.
Both times I've used Shoe Goo to install the interior which also works really well.

On the Honcho you can actually use the roll cage as an interior cage just by turning it around back words and then trimming off the excess. ...sorry, I can't seem to find pics.

It's a great color. What paint did you use. The factory color from Jeep is actually called "Amber Fire Pearl" but i used Tamiya Metallic Orange, and it came out surprisingly close.

For a long time I was the only person around with a 1:1 that color until last year. I was not happy when I saw one with very similar mods...

I'm actually going to experiment with the dingo cage in my XJ. It's a bit wide, but I think I can trim the width down and flip it around, and the angle in the back almost lines right up with the XJ A-pillar
