Yet another makeover of my SCX.....Summit body w/interior and lights

I've had this truck since they first came out and it has been pretty much unbreakable. I think this is the sixth different body I've done for it. I have always wanted to do up a Summit body for it, and I finally got one on EBay for cheap. I also picked up the exoskeleton and fender flares for it, too. I plan to put in a full interior w/ driver, roof rack, lights. Most of the accessories are currently attatched to other bodies that are at the end of their lifespan. I've got the body masked off and I think I'm going with orange for the color. I did some cutting and bracing to utilize the stock mounting holes and Maxx body posts. I won't have to do anything to change the wheelbase since I lengthened it awhile back when I did a Pro-Line Topkick body for it. I think I'll also go over everything, check for missing screws, clean & lube every bearing, and throw a new servo at it. Should be pretty cool when it's all done.....

Most recently, it was sporting this body....

Before that it looked like this.

For the longest time, it was wearing the Topkick body.

For a short time it looked like this....

This was my first really scale body I did for it; got me in XRC magazine....

What I've got done so far.

Front body mount, courtesy of my Maxx stockpile. I know it is crooked, but the body is straight when it's on there.

And rear body mount. Ugly, but solid. I used Pro-Line extended Maxx posts with screws drilled through the bottom holes and into the last holes on the frame. Just makes it. I had to brace it fore and aft and side to side to keep it from moving around. Like I said, ugly, but it will all be hidden with the body on there.

Multiple coats of liquid mask applied....more to come!

Got a lot done on the old SCX tonight! Really chilly tonight, but I still opted to paint her up. I don't have all my airbrush at the ready in my new place yet, so I went through my stash of rattle cans. Two cans with a little black left in them and a can of firery orange that I never got around to using. I was going to go with competition orange, but this looks alright. I made use of a hairdryer as I shook the cans and also to preheated the body and cure the paint. Done this lots of times with no problem. Looks pretty good. I also got the exocage put together and mounted and also got my interior in place. Still gotta add a few scale goodies inside, but I just wanted to see if my old one would fit. Perfect! I also have to mount the roof rack, wire up the lights and add a Pro-Line western rear bumper. I have the plastic Summit front bumper, and figured a way to attatch it, but I'm going to leave it off. The mount would be flimsy and I think it would lessen my ground clearance on steep descents. Once all the scale goods are done, I'm going to go through the truck and get it back to new running condition (almost). I'm going to do some desiring also. My winch only works sporadically, so I removed it, but the harness and wires are all still in place. A nice novelty to have on the truck, but I never really used it too much. Here's some pics of my progress....

Black first.....

Then orange....

And a shot sans driver.

Fits like a glove,...

Looks great. I was wondering when I would see someone do this. Great color and great fit.

Thanks! I'm not sure how many have done this. I searched in vain to see another example of an SCX with Summit body, but couldn't find one. Seemed like the easiest way to get an exocage without having the skillset or equipment to weld. Someday, perhaps....for now, I like it! Time to give her the makeover she deserves. This thing has been beat on for years, and have only broken one knuckle. Replaced that (and the c-hub) with aluminum and that's it. The rest of the truck is as it was since the day I built it, with the exception of the lengthened drive shafts & tires.

I plan on keeping my trail truck brushed ans plastic. The rock racer is already sporting a brushless system, beef tubes, cvd's, and aluminum up front. Did add steel tranny gears and mated WB8's to both though. Dreading the day I break one or both.

needs 2.2s. looks good though. i like it. i saw an article a while back where they turned a summit into a scaler by adding the slayer arms and 2.2s i really liked the looks of that truck. glad to see someone put it on a honcho

I remember that article, too. I think that's when I first started contemplating mating the summit body & the SCX. I'll have to see if I can find it. I started looking into rigging up some lighting. I have a set of Pro-Line roof lights that have leds wired to them on another body, but the wires are soldered on and run through holes in the roof. That will require some cutting to get them out. That's ok, because it's a Bronco body that I plan to cut up and use on my Wraith. I'm also re-building an electric 4-Tec, doing some work on my AX-10, my Slash needs some work, I'm building a Slash roller to sell, and my Wraith needs some axles installed. It just never ends!! That's good......I like wrenching as much as driving!!

MAXXMASHER 11-18-2012 05:42 PM

Still messing around with this thing. Trying to decide what lights to put on it and where. I also threw a set of 2.2's on there, just to see how it looks. I would have to raise the body a bit to drive with them on there, and the mounts as they are set are as high as they'll go. I always liked this truck with 1.9's on it anyways. Makes things a bit more challenging. Anyways, here a pic of those 2.2's......

Yeah the 2.2s are where it's at in my opinion. Those 1.9s look nice but that summit body makes em look like there struggling to keep it up or something haha. Nice build overall tho "thumbsup" never really liked the summit body until I saw that 2.2 pic

MAXXMASHER 11-19-2012 01:13 PM

I had yet another set of wheels/tires laying around to mount on this rig, and the rings match pretty well. I know you guys are rooting for 2.2's, but I think I like these 1.9 chisels on here the best. They are small; almost like 1.7's or something. I think they'll give it a more "scale" feeling when driving. Like a daily driver that's trail capable. It's hard to tell though; everything seems great until it gets tested on the rocks. See whatcha think of these.....

Yeah, I'd love to! Problem is I'll be pretty busy for a bit. Gotta get ready for deer camp and try to get some lights up before I leave. Once I get back next Wednesday, all my spare time will probably be spent hunting until I drop one. Hopefully it will be like last year; shot an eight-point and was back at camp by 8:30 am on the first day of rifle season! I was literally in my stand about fifteen minutes. Don't worry we'll get some crawling in, one way or another!! I can only tinker around in my basement so long before I get out and break some parts!!!

2.2's look like there would work great on this rig!

Finally got to try my remade SCX out on the rocks today! Beautiful crawling weather for Thanksgiving day!! Took this, my Wraith, and the AX-10 & my brother in law brought his Hi-Lift, Wraith, and Losi crawler. Good times! Did some streamside crawling and found a nice mudhole to play in. This truck is completely different with the tiny 1.9's and the low body. Really have to think about the lines and everything becomes technical. Total blast!! Motor started to cut out and I'm sure being packed with mud was a major contributing factor! A little motor spray and a check of the brushes will have her as good as new.....that's why we travel with multiple trucks!! How 'bout some pics??

I'm all for smaller wheels, but those are too small for that size body and wheelbase. Put some 1.9 Iroks on there.

That looks great gives me a new perspective on a Summit body it really needs 2.2s though.
