Default 08's rebuild (pics n questions)

So my 1/10 has been sitting for long enough and decided to finally do something with it. she started out a couple years ago like this.

In stock form with the exception of shocks, steel shafts, cheap esc, and wheel weights i was overall pleased and surprised with performance.

tons of fun with the taco body, then i tried a jeep body for a bit,

i quickly destroyed that body, so now it is time to try to figure out how to redo this truck completely with this.

First was to get the wheelbase to look realistic, i went and bought a dingo thinking the rails were shorter since the wheelbase was shorter.....not.
But alls not lost cause i'll just use the extra parts as spares for one of the trucks. In order the get the correct base i had to move the rear shock hoops because if i moved the fronts they would be sitting in a funky position on the frame. i ended up with this location.

Looks like i'll need to make custom hoops(if i can) or hopefully find someone that will. I'm not sure what to make hoops out of. I can braze and wonder if copper or brass will be strong enough?
Then i had to move the front shock mounts to the forward most mount hole.

I robbed the prolines from the honcho, talk about some DIRTY oil!!! and one was empty, not dry but it was most def empty.
I knew my links were going to be too long now, so i decided to do some mocking up to see just how things sat.
through a bunch of trial and mounting locations i ended up with this (for very rough mock up) for now.

No binding, articulation seems good. axles are sitting almost dead horizontal with a very slight tilt up. I don't want to get too far ahead of myself as i am almost positive these are not gonna be the axles i'll be using for the final build.
Then i remembered i cut my honcho frame a while back, so i swapped rails out and this is looking much better. Why cut a fresh frame when i have one that will work that 's been cut and will need cut down even more right.

almost exactly where it needs to be( just a tad more off and the front will be the length i need.

Still will need more cut off the rear. waiting until i can mock the body stable and decide on if the electronics box will be back there or not.
Next i made a pair of these ( yes i realize only one is pictured),

Those are the new shock hoop crossmembers. Hopefully today I'll be able to drill and tap them and get them in place. I know this isn't making much sense, and maybe this will clear things up a bit.......
The goal is to end up hopefully with the motor and tranny up front and my 1:1 transfer in the middle. How I'm going to to about that i am not sure. I suspect i will have to move the mount location of the rear links back (and make links, which i already know I'm gonna end up doing before it's all over) so that the 1:1 sits with the imput/outputs at a height that is even with the frame rails.
If it sits above the links then i believe there will be too much angle on the shafts, if i mount it below the links, i'll lose clearance..... more to come.

Got to thinking about interior, never done any interior before and figure i could use some parts from the dingo body. So i began cutting up the body to use the dash. since i don't have an eye for perspective for now i left the seat uppers attached to it until i have a floorpan and actual seats so i can use this as my guide in where to place seats later.

I was considering using the bed from the honcho, but since i have had a tire carrier sitting around that i never used, figured it would be stupid to have 2 spares, or well a spare inside and outside. I'll have to trim this some more if i want to lower it and make wheel wells.

Is there any other floorpan out there other than the proline pl-c? i suppose i could use a pl-c but i have never tried plastic welding and have zero styrene experience (i think before this is over i'll have some though).

Looking good. If you trashed a Lexan Jeep body...I can't wait to see what you do to this one

That interior fit pretty good (seats may be a little far back but oh well), nice work! PL floor pan is the only one I know of. I can tell you from experience that a floor pan and inner fender wells is a great intro to working with styrene.

I'd make those shock hoops out of solid 3/16" steel rod. I don't think brass would hold up very long, those hoops take more of a beating than you may think.

Good luck

Well, after some kicking around the hoop dilemma with a friend we came up with this... I went ahead and ordered some alum. hoops, decided to try cutting the front tab( ear) off , getting it mounted where it needs , pick up some 6061 round stock and just TIG in the extra length. Should be golden. I broke my very old M3 tap this morning do needless to say I didn't get the cross members installed as planned, since I also had to work on the 1:1 race car today as well for about 5 hours.
Thanx for the heads up on the brass/copper, I really wasn't sure if either would work for the long haul.

Heard a commotion out in the garage a few minutes ago and glad i went out to see what the ruckus was all about....... To my surprise i stumble across this scenario playing out.

It seems Miranda Lawson has decided the jeep build is hers and she brought some hired help (Robocop) to enforce that the build stays on track and gets completed (by the garage muscle Big show and that Robo is to help if required). So as the story was told to me is that Miranda caught Robo not really enforcing that Big show stay busy, so...... she put the heat on Robo, who in turn put the heat to Big show, who as you can see is feverishly pouring through his scx-10 honcho owner/parts manual to see what needs to be done next.

I had to see if Big show was really looking through a manual or was he hiding a Playboy behind an axial cover.......

Oh well, maybe next time i'll catch him gettin slick....... the boredom of waiting for parts.......

Had some time to begin on little body work pieces I know gotta go.

Then checked the mail and began working on these.

Will cut the other ear off tomorrow and hopefully get over to use a TIG this weekend to get them back together, after I turn down a piece of 5/16 rod for the extensions that need welded in.
This is going kinda slow as Christmas is coming, and I'm wrapping up a couple other projects at the same time.

Got some more done today.......

Bumper off and light holders off,

^^^^ I'm glad I did that since lights there will be useless(covered) by a winch later possibly, even of not it looks more realistic now with the light holders gone.
next was to cut the rear of the rails down....

Then shave on the RX box some for the relocate. First was the rear tabs

Got room now for it to fit

Next was the FM antennae tab

Got the other vanquish rear shock hoop ear cut off today as well and ordered axles. So it's official I'll be diving into styrene for my first time. I picked up some and gonna practice on some scrap. Nervous about messing anything up.

Used available resources (clamps) to mock up the ears placement so I can take measurements of the extensions needed and drill the frame holes . I put a lil superglue on the ears and gonna let that sit overnight before I remove the clamps.

Dug out a rear bumper I never used and figured I'd use it for this build but somehow it's bowed

Don't know why the delrin bowed liked that on me. Any ideas on how I should try to get it straight again?? My thoughts were to set it in front of a space heater with a weight on it in the middle. I just realized the dingo I bought didn't come with bead locks, outta the flat irons and these ripsaws which ones seem to be better performers?

My understanding is the ripsaws are pretty good out of the box, flat irons get a lot better with usage. Try them both and see which suits your style.

Thnx, I got some flatirons I used before just didn't wanna break up all the bead locks to swap for the saws if the saws r junk. Got bored today and picked up some little crap while out Christmas shopping. Got the jack mounted.

I've had this snorkel for a while and dug it out and glued the pieces together, not sure if it was supposed to be in two pieces but that's how it was shipped to me.

And after one more stop to grab a 6 pack I got home and eyed the cooler.... I never knew the lid came off!!! I'm stoked, now I just gotta figure out what to make ice cubes out of and I'd really be stoked.

Whatever PL uses to make these , it's the right "R" for something. I had to do a little cutting but lid is off now. It'd be cool if I could make some hinges for it too.
So I played instead of getting on the lathe and turning the aluminum extensions I need for the rear shock hoops.

And now i get to a point where i can almost begin making my links.

Impressed with the quality, but then again I've never had anything other than stock axles before. I ordered two of the four link/steering kits as well, before i can make links i gotta figure out how to mount the upper links. i was wanting to do cms but these axles have the upper link mounts incorporated into the servo plate(on axle). I didn't spend much time eying the servo plate, but i think i can cut it up to just use enough of it to utilize the upper link portion.
Anybody have ideas on a jig setup that keeps the axles lined up while getting measurements for links?? I was going to take a strip of flat bar and drill holes in it where i know my wheelbase needs to be at , then use spacers and bolt the bar to the outside of the wheels so that as far as that orientation the wheels could not move father apart or closer since they'd be "locked in place by a bar. But how can i keep my axles from flopping around while also keeping my chassis at the height i want it so o can get good measurements for the links? Sorry if this is a dumb question i just haven't done a whole lot of custom stuff before and was hoping to see some ideas on what all you all use when doing this .

interesting build. curious to see the outcome once finished with the way you did some things.

as for a jig, just take a 2 pieces of wood (like a 1x4) and notch it where you want wheelbase - then just put axle in the notch. for links, i'd just make them from allthread/brakeline since you can just make a rough measurement and the allthread can be adjusted, THEN sleeve it when you know how long.

curious why cut your rear shock mounts like that as opposed to moving them back a little to get a solid mount, and just add a spacer for mounting the shock itself? i dunno, IMO just seems like a bad idea and waste of $ on alum shock mounts. good luck!

thnx for the jig suggestion, i cut my rear shock hoops because i needed to move them that far forward to make a believable wheelbase. If i moved the fronts any then it would have place the hoops pretty far back and down the frame horns so i decided to move the rears forward and extend the front leg of them to compensate for the new placement.
So, i went out and messed with the links some, just rough mocking for now. after looking at the link/servo plate for the worms i will have to use the rear plate and just trim it down and the front either just use the servo plate and trim it and do the cms or keep it complete. I am still undecided on the cms , the main reason is i the short WB is gonna add to my COG, and with the front of the frame horns chopped off i am limited on space up there now for a servo as well.
Anywhoo..... here's tonight's link mock up with the worms.

A question on axle angle, what angle is recommended? should i just zero it (horizontal) ? How much would be the max? Once i get the angle i can go ahead and begin to get real measurements and revamp little things in the links mounting in the middle of the chassis. I guess nobody reads this or nobody has any ideas on my bowed delrin bumper from above.....

you shouldn't have a pinion angle at "0" especially with the shortend wheel base. have the pinion shaft pointed up towards your transfer case out put.

Just lengthen the upper links.

Thnx fordrox that's what I thought. Well I didn't get to use the tig on the hoops yet, but I did get the rear upper link plate cut down and links are almost done. Gotta cut the rear lowers down a tad more. And I cut spacers today and got them ready. Just need to drill them out and install in the middle between the links.
Movement is nicer now that I put little spacers between the frame rails and links.

Still debating on final reduction ...... Easiest two reductions I can get to is 69:1 and 80:1 . I'm thinking 69:1 with a 4 pole bl setup. But I'm really a noob on what to expect as I've never ran bl before.

Not a lot done since I've been thinking on the drive train, Still gotta cut the rear lowers down a tad and looking at my xfer placement as well. Did my first bit o patching w/styrene.

That was some thicker stuff but it went easier than i thought. Rack came in today so got it on.

then decided to go ahead and cut out the tinted windshield, and later find something clear to put in its place.

Needed to mount the rack anyways since i want all holes done before paint goes on, whenever that will be. Been going nuts on this stupid final reduction and what im gonna do. If i knew how to just attach a driveshaft to a motor and it was ligit, then i think im gonna begin w/40:1 on 3s and slowly plug away at it from there. Kinda sucks bein a noob but i gotta start somewwhere.
Yeah, I found my old light tent, didn't want everybody seeing all my crap layin around in pics. Looks a tad wrinkled though.

Wow, tough crowd here.... Guess this is a crappy build or I need to change my name to Bender or Harley , sheesh all they gotta do to get a response is drill a hole in a piece of metal and it's magical.
