First off BUDGET would be a huge factor, that being said.....
1. Factory (works great)
2. Axle for performance , Chassis for looks
3. Depends on the width you want. Wide = Wraith Narrow = SCX10
4. HiTec (No questions asked)
5. Straight
6. MIPs
7. HH 35t Torque Master
8. BeadLocks
9. PitBulls

1. factory chassis or custom built I looked at the X-trail, but ulitimately went factory SCX chassis.
2. Cms or axle mounted CMS look cooler, IMO, but I went the lazy route and left my servo atop the axle.
3. Scx axles or Wraith Being that I was k-balling the AX in my avatar, I went with AX/SCX axles. Also, I was building mine as a CUCV, so I didn't want the wider Wraith axles putting the tires outside the body. Guess it depends on the look you're going for (if any).
4. Traxxas servo or hi-tec I left the AS-2 on mine, and now I notice the bushings are bagged out. Shoulda put a BB servo in ther while I had it apart. If your Hi-Tek is a ball bearing servo, I'd throw that in.
5. Bent links or straight ,wraith or scx I needed to really shorten my wheelbase, so I made my own. Axial ends, 6-32 rod, and 1/4" stainless tubing pulled from the scrap bin at work. I went straight, don't really need 'flash' for what I built.
6. Mips or other brand shafts and axles Again, I went stock AX, 'cause that's what I had. If you've got some coin saved up, go MIPs or JunFac.
7. puller mtr or crawler mtr I went HH Torqemaster Pro in 35 turns, nice.
8. bead locks or glue Beadlocks! I went RC4WD Steelies in 1.9.
9. pit bulls or irox Your call, Dude. I like the IROK better, but it dpends on what you like and what you want yours to look like.
Your mileage may vary, but this is what I was after,

As you can see, just a nice, 'safe' build, didn't really need to go too nuts with a trail truck. That's why I gave the (kinda) lame answers I did. Guess you need to sit down and figure out how wild you want to go.

1. Factory (works great)
2. Axle for performance , Chassis for looks. If for scale comps, cms.. just use a higher torque Hitec servo.. I run 333oz an could use more.. lol..
3. SCX10. You can always mod later with beef tubes an vp chubs an knuckles.. I like the axial cvd's for just as much steering.
4. HiTec (No questions asked) !!!!!!!!!
5. Straight (up front) 30* bend (for rear)
6. MIPs
7. HH 35t Torque Master
8. BeadLocks
9. PitBulls with 4.5" CI dd foams! Med all around or med front firm rear.. I have found my front tires(pitbulls) to steer an side hill way better this way! Not to mention they just work in All situations..

no need for all that vp stuff, it doesn't make it perform any better... It's a personal preferrence to have it..
