Default First Scale Crawler Build...

Hey guys, What's up. New to the forums and new to Crawlers too. I've been perusing the forums here trying to learn what I can, but I still have some questions.

I've been into RC for a really long time and always found Crawlers / Scalers just simply awesome, but with an appetite for racing, I've never found time or money for one...until now. My wife's getting me a Axial SCX10 Dingo kit for Christmas and so I need to finish out the build. I'm hoping that I can find some insight here to help the building process go a little smoother.

  • What ESC/Motor would you guys recommend?
  • Any must have upgrades?
  • Servo: torque requirements?
  • Building tips?
Thanks guys.

any more details? sorry, but like I said, I know very little about this end of the hobby.

What tires?

Upgrade what on the steering?

So I'm thinking about grabbing a Tekin FX-R esc and a 35T brushed motor. Why not run brushless? Cogging issues? just curious...

go on rc4wd.com , go on rpphobby.com and look around ... the steering arms convert the stock steering to the rods so it turns better

yep been looking on both of those sites... The only thing steering related that I seen was an Integy set that includes knuckles....not a big fan of Integy

I thought the kit came with the solid links... It's been years since I've had my kit but I didnt do anything to it. Ran a tekin FX+35T and never had issues but that was years ago and it was the OG scx kit so things may have changed other then no more beadlocks.. :(

it comes with solid links for the suspension not for the steering i believe,, i have the honch its bone stock plastic everything and it works great for scale driving like its ment for,, iv talked to alot of guys and they always say they upgrade cuz they dont drive it scale,, its capable of alot of crazy wheelin thats when you break stuff,, so it all depend on how your going to drive it is how you should build it,,, i would put a good hi-tec servo in it, solid link steering, and a good motor esc combo like tekin,, and run a 2 or 3 cell lipo and your good,,

I want to be able to do some crawling with it, but nothing too extreme. The lower links and the steering links are all made of aluminum tubing, so I'm guessing I'm good to go on the steering. I guess I'll pick up some bead locks and another set of tires too. Any suggestions? Read some good things on the Pitbull tires...

Gear I'm planning to use:
Futaba S9351 high torque servo
Tekin FXR
35t Motor (Tekin?)
Trak Power 2S Lipo

i wouldnt get to worried about upgrades unless you want to change something. axial stuff is pretty tough out of the box. run stock till you break something then upgrade. mine was rtr came with stock electrics and still using stock electrics a year later. servo is fine. untill somethng breaks its staying stock. i swapped to four link, just because. changes to pitbulls just because. (they actually are a nice tire.)

It's a kit version, so I still need to pick up some electrics.

Looking for some cheap beadlocks...any suggestions? Black plastic ones would be fine.
