| New 2012 SCX10 Unlimited Rubicon
"Murdered Out" ?... I am one of the many who jumped on the new SCX10 Rubicon release Man, I have been lookin' forward for this rig to become available! SWEET! This will be my first "scaler", so as you can probably imagine I am pretty excited Just got the rig yesterday. Never even drove it in its stock configuration... and in hind sight I wish I would have... oh well, Im sure I wasn't missing out on much... (and it's too late now, already been modded!) Here's my issue: As I fall asleep at night I'm thinking about what I can do next. It starts out as a nice dream, and then next thing I know I find myself dwelling on the fact that once everybody get's their new RTR Rubicon they have been waiting for, there is gonna' be way too many SILVER rigs that all look nearly identical running around! So, I decided I'm gonna' repaint mine on the outside. Thinking of going with a satin or low gloss black... with a couple dents and scrapes before painting... already got the decals stripped off, so I'm pretty much committed at this point! Hmmmm... This being your first truck you should drive it stock. That way you have a baseline to compare to in the future when you are modifying and upgrading.

Ive also heard using actual brake fluid (not brake cleaner) removes lexan paint without wrecking the lexan underneath **edit** found the YT link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJ2fScdpzqs |

I posted about using nitro fuel or removal... i first tried the dot3 fluid for about 2 hours and it didnt hardly budge the factory axial paint but the dot3 fluid does remove the nitro fuel,... so you still should use it as prep before painting, unless you have something better that removes nitro residue. just my .02 cents and I am hardly an expert

why go through all the work of attempting to strip the paint and risk ruining your brand new body? I would just paint the exterior of the body since you already have a nice silver undercoat to show scratches. It will look a lot more "scale"

yes, removal of factory paint, I have not personally tried the DOT4, I used what I had available to me at the time, some old 30% nitro and the standard DOT3 fluid. after 2 hours with the DOT3 fluid it barely had any effect. I do however plan on getting some DOT4 and trying it... If anyone else has tried this please let everyone know your results. this is how mine turned out after removing the green factory paint and repainting Last edited by ochevys54; 12-03-2012 at 05:30 PM. I've made a small bit of progress with my project. Today was the first day it wasn't raining out of the last 5 days straight, and its supposed to start raining again tomorrow. I dont have a garage, so this break in the rain was exactly what I was waiting for! I'm not completely done yet (still need to do the windshield), but I think it turned out pretty decent and its just going to look better once it get a few scratches into the silver IMO Here are a few pix of my progress ~ Masked off the "interior" Applied a couple light mist coats of Pactra lexan paint for good adhesion I let the Pactra dry for over an hour before following up with several light coats of Krylon (for plastic's) just in case the 2 paints didn't want to play well together... everything worked out as intended! (almost forgot to mention I added a couple dents to the passenger side edge of the hood which can also be seen in this pic) While I still had the cage off I decided I should snip out a pair of dash covers out of some self-adhesive felt I already had laying around to help cover up some more of the fake looking silver color in the interior Thats a bit better! Reapplied the basic escential and most needed decals only (silver over black)... starting to look like a new rig (thats no longer silver!) | |

The cool thing about painting it on the outside is that when it gets really beat up you can just clean it with soap and water, retape the interior. Then just repaint over the dents, scratches, nicks. It adds to the appeal of the beat on scale trail rig!

Looks great. I've painted my Dingo on the outside and glad I did. I've got another to paint and will do the outside also. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for all the positive comments guys! Next thing I would like to do is cover up the silver on the back's of all the seats... that just screams "fake" to me. |
