Default Exposed gears with mirrored tranny in dirt/mud?

Ok I am doing my first scx build with a Dingo and trying to decide whether I want to mirror the tranny or not.
The only con I see is that you cannot run the cover. I plan on waterproofing the electronics so I can run through water and mud. Is this going to be a issue with the exposed gears?
I have done a ton of searches and have not seen this addressed.

Thanks in advance!

I don't think it will be an issue. I run the same set up in mud snow dirt. As long as you keep it clean after runs should be fine.

Really? I just see some crap getting in there and chewing up the plastic gear.
I might have to see if I can make up a backing plate for the cover.

I thought the same. But 3yr with 2 scx's no gear covers only thing I've got caught has Ben few leafs and twigs. No premature gear wear. I only see an issue if your in mud up to the spur.

I've never run a gear cover and with 3 mirror imaged trans haven't had an issue. Going 32p would possibly help you sleep better at night.

i've run the same transmission without a cover in my scx10 for 3 years and only had replace the idler gear 4 months ago, still running the stock bottom plastic gear and metal top gear, i run my truck in sand, mud, water, and when i take it apart it's spotless, absolutely minimal dirt and grit inside that will cause no damage to the plastic gears, just make sure the gears are properly greased. i mirrored it also. i am even running the same plastic spur, these trucks are very tough when treated correctly.

Ok well guess I will switch it back again!
I put it together stock and just rotated the skid, then I decided to mirror the trans and realized the cover didnt fit. Did a bunch of research and found out you dont use it, wrote this thread, then switched it back to stock. Now I guess I will pull it back out and switch it again.

What is everyone using for spacers? Or did you just cut up the stock cover?

Do you mean the spacers between the tranny case and motor plate? If so, I think they should've came with your kit on one of the parts trees.

Oh yeah? I am still assembling so I will have to look through my parts.
Thanks!

Yeah, just rotate the skid. That gets the motor on the right side and you can still use the gear cover. Best of both worlds.

Motor to the passenger side is only part of it, getting it front side of the skid is the other.
