Default Sluggo's Dingo Build

Well, I figure that since this is my fist crawler, I'd put together this thread to help to keep me on track and to ask the community input for help. I have so much to learn about crawlers, so any help that you guys have will be much appreciated.

Can't get my pics to upload for some reason, so I'll add them when I can.

Currently, Stock SCX-10 Dingo

next step... electronics

3 cell or 2 cell?

I'm looking to purchase my electrics tonight, but not sure what direction to go. I'm leaning towards a Tekin brushless RC motor with a RS esc and running a 2 cell shorty pack....

The other option is FXR esc with a 55T running 2 or 3 cell lipo. not sure why some guys are running 3 cell opposed to 2 cell... a little insight into this would be appreciated.

Thoughts?

I think you get a longer run time from running the 3c over the 2 cell

I wanted order my electrics earlier this week, but i still cant make up my mind.

Anyone have any luck with the Tekin ROC 412 motor? I have a spare RX8 that I can pair with it. I'm really thinking that a 4 pole would be beast.

If I don't go with a ROC412 then Im going brushed. So....

Thoughts between a Holmes ESC and Tekin FXR?

Also 35t vs 45t vs 55t which would you choose?

3s !! Its like a v8 conpared to a v6 (2s) ... If you go with a Holmes or castle product I believe you can run either Without adjusting anything.. The tekin you have to adjust on the ESC, which is Very easy if it's accessible, But some of my red I can't get to it that easy.. Both are great, I Have a castle link and it Is very user-friendly, And the Holmes is compatible. I would like to know is some more info on the motor, I'm about to purchase a tekin also, I was gonna get the pro4 3300 for my wraith, Already had my mind made up, And now I see these tekin roc 412 for sale. Now I am really confused on which motor to buy. I tried to research the motor but there is little info i guess because its new? Anyways good luck on your build!! My first Crawler turned into a sick addiction!!

Thanks for the info... Still waiting on getting the electrics until I do a little more research on the brushless option.

If you haven't bought anything yet then go 3s. I've run the Tekin FXR and the RS. Easy to program with the USB link. I hear good things about the BRXL and you might be able to get away without a BEC if you don't get too powerful servo. With the Tekins you will need a BEC, the RX8 being the exception.

Do you plan on getting wet? If so then go brushed 35T. If you are going to stay dry then spring for the 412.

I run the FXR on 3s, granted my servo is no powerhouse (Hitec 5645). I have been a little worried, but it has been doing fine and isn't running hot. A BEC is certainly good insurance in any case, and you get ample power to your servo for optimal performance to boot. It is a great little ESC for brushed crawlers thats for sure, and I was able to contact someone at my local HobbyTown who had a Hotwire USB programmer to get everything set up (some things cannot be adjusted with the on-board setup procedure). The only negative thing I can say about it is that it was a little nerve wracking to solder on that lil bugger.

Yeah, I haven't bought anything yet and it looks like my RX8 is going in my new eBuggy...I really want to go brushless, but I can buy a brushed motor and esc for the cost of a brushless motor.

What lipo packs are you guys using? just kinda curious of what size pack to get. I was thinking of going with a 2 cell shorty pack that I have unless I go 3 cell, which then I'll need to pick up something.

I run old Thunder Power 3s 1320mAh packs because of how small and light they are. Plenty of run time with a 55T motor just creeping around. I'd probably use something like a 2200mAh 3s pack if I were out doing more trail type driving with something like a 35T motor (3300mAh+ if I were to run 2s packs).

I've actually ran some 2200's from my Trex in my Dingo. It's a great balance between size/weight and run time. Since you have them already, that would be a great option, and they laugh at the amp draw from our crawlers compared to the ~5min run time in the helis, haha. I remember someone saying they got 1.5hr run times on the trail with 3s 2200's with what I think was a brushless Tekin 13.5T setup.

Cool, that's a huge help guys. I was thinking that you crawler guys were using the larger 5400-6400 packs like I use in my race buggies.

I just installed a novak goat 3s setup with their 18.5 motor. Seems to work very well. Was going to go lipo, but the guy at the hobby store talked me into the 3200 nimh. Will run for about an hour on a charge. Still wondering if I should have gone lipo...

I use a 2s 6600 Nano Tech pack in my Dingo. Crawled for about 5 hours yesterday and only put in 5400mah on recharge. That was with a 35T Integy motor geared 87-15 and running a bunch of lights and a couple of pulls on the servo winch.

Well, some prefer huge packs for all-day run times. The only real downside is weight. I don't mind swapping a pack out so I prefer smaller light packs. If you are just crawling there is much less of an amp-draw vs. racing or bashing around an off-road rig. my 1320 packs offer a couple hours+ creep time so I'd expect maybe an hour out on a trail where I'm using a bit more throttle to get around. If you run 3s, your 2100's should be a real nice balance between weight and run time. Our helis pull WAY more amperage than the average trail rig.

Yup, I would have. How many cells are your NiMh packs? Lipos weigh a lot less per watt/hour, are easy to maintain, and out-perform older Nickel based packs.

6 cell. Sounds like I should be getting more than an hour of run time out of them too? Wish I could return them and get lipos - already ran them a couple of times... What brand of lipos are you guys running?

Good luck with your build sluggo!
