Default SCX10 front overdrive

Has anyone had an issues installing a 36/14 overdrive (AX30401) in the front axle? I replaced the stock gears with the ones that came in the kit and now about every half turn of the diff, it's binding. A little force (not real hard) and it will go, then bind another half turn later. Mind you this is with nothing else in the axle and even one half off. I completely put it together the first time and noticed it then.

I can't for the life of me figure out what its catching on and hoping someone else has run into the same issue installing.

Disconnect the driveshaft from the front axle and spin the wheels.

Does it spin freely while both tires are straight ahead?
Does it spin freely while both tires are turned left or right?
Did you shim the diff or pinion?
Did you re-install the gasket between the ring gear and the locker housing?
Is it binding internally or is it binding at the knuckles?

Ring gear may not be seated all the way on the diff case/locker and/or screws not tightened evenly...

It's binding internally. You can feel it even with the driveline side by itself with the diff and piņon in there. There's no play with the pinion so didn't think a shim would fit it there. Did not shim the diff. There was no gasket between the ring and locker. This was an RTR FYI.

Have you tried putting the stock gears back in and see if the issue goes away? Are the teeth ok on the overdrives? Are the screws for the ring gear sitting flush enough to not rub on the housing?

Yep, checked all that. I've taken it apart and put it back together 4 times now.

So I finally figured it out. Ever so small, theres a defect on one of the grooves of the pinion.

Its at about 8-9 o'clock. Crazy....

Thank God I'm not the only one to experience this. Installed them in the front of mine and drove me nuts for a couple days. I just ran mine and it has pretty much gone away now

I had that problem using the gears with an aftermarket locker.
I removed the gasket and it worked fine.

I'm bet plenty of these went out with that same valley that's not machined fully before they caught the defect. Axial is sending a replacement, just sucks to have to wait now.

Asked if they want the old one back, if not I may take a dremel to it and see what happens.

I was struggling with a same type of problem myself.

Took me three times to rebuild my front axle and a lot of youtubing before I found out that in the driveshafts (between axle and trans) the CVD pins need to go in the same direction. If they are not aligned, it will cause the axle to stutter in a very weird way. You don't notice it while driving, but having your truck belly up on your lap you'll definitely notice it.

Thought I'd share if someone stumbles upon these types of problems later.

FWIW,
With an aftermarket locker and MIP drive shafts, I had to put a shim between the drive shaft and the outer pinion bearing to keep the pinion from over engaging the ring and binding.

I have this on both my rigs, can you elaborate? I have the newer shafts and don't think they are dog bones. Are you talking about the pins that hold the driveshaft to the pinion gear?

Ideally, yes all pins should be in phase. However as close to in phase as humanly possible will work for our purposes.

I remember when building my son's Jeep, purposefully putting them in opposing directions thinking it would be better in some way until I stumbled upon a thread here talking about phasing the pins.

Once you understand this, the manual does instruct you to do so, but it's not that clear. It tells you to line up the markings on the drive shaft ends, but it doesn't specifically mention the pins. It should.

Never ran it the "wrong" way. Caught it beforehand.
