Default axial D90

ok guys, so taxes FINALLY came in, and im going to pick up the jk kit and a pair of d90 bodies (since my contact sells em for $50, 69 shipped)!!!

i really want to build a true scaler and i was looking for tips on the body mounting and wheel/tire/paint choices. my preference is flat black, but thats just me....

COME ON!

also, if a better chassis exists for this body and my idea, please let me know!

for mounting the body get some steel sliders and use them to mount the body on by drilling holes in the sliders and putting screws through well thats the way ive seen a few being done i think there was one or two on here or velcro using a plate on the shock mounts with the velcro ontop basicly a stealth mount rc drifters do it that way or even magnet suing the same stealth mount.

heres the velcro way

Project - Land Rover Defender D90 1 10 Scale - Axial SCX10 Crawler - Brand Specific Kits - Pakistan RC

slider way

I'm not sure what the logic is in getting the JK kit, but you can save a significant chunk of cash and get the Dingo kit instead, $80 cheaper + a wheelbase that may be spot on for the D90 (no need for new links).

The only functional difference with them is the piston, $10 for 4.

Sorry, I'm not your hero, but those shocks are the same as any other scx10 shock except for the piston. If an Icon logo and shiny body is worth $80 to you, then by all means. I'm just giving you the logical point of view to save money (without any notable sacrifice). Since you are going for a speciffic build using a completely different body it makes more sense to go with the Dingo kit, or even get a roller off the classifieds.

damn you for making sense....

anyway, would the scx10 chassis be the better platform?

I don't see how you could go wrong with an scx10 as the base. I don't have experience with others, but the scx10 is tried and true, has a large aftermarket following and is widely available.

I was only pointing out that with your proposed route you would basically be spending ~$330 for a linkless roller (since you need someting closer to 11" wheelbase for the D90). Maybe someone can chime in if the Dingo wheelbase is a match. If so, you save the $80 in kit cost, and you won't have to spend another chunk on a link set. That pays for the D90 body and then some. In the end it's your money and nobody can tell you how to spend it (except for the government, lol).

One thing I notice with scale D90 builds is that they sit pretty low and run smallish tires, so the stock 90mm shocks may even be too long to get the look you are going for anyways. There are plenty of D90 builds to look through to get an idea of some basic things you'll need to work through to pull it off. It's all going to depend on just how involved and scale you want to go with it.

Lmao, I know exactly how you feel. While I'm OK at it, body work is not my strong suit and a lot of the hardbody builds are very intimidating. I think the Toyota is probably the easiest to start with and can basically go from mild to wild depending on if you want to get into tube work and some of the more intensive body work like bobbing and dove tailing/pinching.

I would say that with whatever you choose to do, hit it head on with confidence, or you'll never make it out alive, hahaha.

Keep in mind you will be able to sell the JK body for a better price than a Dingo body

The d90 is just a little bit shorter than dingo wheelbase. My brother was able to shorten his aluminum axial links with out a problem.
It's not that hard to mount a hard body. Even if you steal it from a crappy off brand rc like I did
A little bit of dremel work and bam. You have something not every one has.
I love my lr3. I had never made links or mounted a hard body, it was not that hard

Don't be scared

The difference is that the D90 is a much bigger project to complete and make look good than simply slapping on an already detailed hardbody off a cheapo RC, especially if one plans to go really scale with it. We are talking about detailed painting/weathering, other detail work, possible suspension work and custom fabbing. Just about anyone can take a stock newbright, nikko, etc. body, put it on the chassis and go drive it around. It's taking a plain white body and completing a scale build that takes a lot more time and care to pull off.

Either way I say dive in head first. Even if it doesn't turn out the way you envision, there is a first time for everything and the experience will pay off in the long run.
