Default Scx10 gearing?

Hello folks. Wanted more scale so sold the Wraith. Am I right in thinking the same gearing 14/87 I used on the Wraith is best for the SCX too? Will be with the stock motor for now. I like to do trail running and crawling...the wraith ate some motors with 16/87 you see...

Thanks

I am running 87/14 in my Honcho and it works fine.

Thanks. I'll change it over when it arrives. :-)

I ran my Honcho a lot last year with 87/20 gearing on 3s and a 45t motor and the motor rarely got warm. It's all about how you drive sometimes.

I dare say the scx10 will be more forgiving than the wraith was. Smaller tires and (likely) a lighter rig and in my case less aggressive driving all add up to less stress on the motor. So anywhere from 12t-20t pinions will be fine depending on what you decide. Start low and gear up either until you're happy with speed and torque or the motor gets too warm.

Thanks Jus. I'm definitely not after speed so I'll stick with 14/87. Think scalers look silly going fast. I have a Stampede 4x4 for light speed. :-)

I use 14-16t pinions and stock spurs on all my scx10 based rigs. 55t motors. 3s. I like to creep.
IMO it makes you a better driver if you do have the wheel speed crutch to fall back on to make it up stuff.

Couldn't agree more.

SCX10's are awesome creepers. I'm running 18/87 and I'd be running 16/87 with my 55T if my 16 tooth wasn't one of those lightweight aluminum RR pinions. That thing is loud. Tekin FXR + heavy steel pinion = near silent creeping.

i ran a 19t on a 3s. 87/14 gearing. worked great. they stopped making the motor so looking at brushless now to keep my speed for hill climbs. still works well for crawling. great for trail running.

gearing is just user preference. i ran 20/87 gearing with a 35 turn motor and felt it was well balanced between torque/speed.

To give ya an idea of how fast 14tooth with 55t motor is, I can usually walk almost as fast as its top speed.

Aye I think when the Stock motor fails a 35t will be next. From what you say I think 55t with 14/87 may be a tad to slow for the trail running. I like it to be able to wander off over terrain not on my path and then catch up. :-)

I would get a few pinions and experiment to see which one will work for you. Just make sure to check the temperature when running the higher gearing to make sure you are not over heating. You could even report back on your findings.

Worst case is that you have to spend quality time running your rig while testing the pinion gears.
