Motor overheating.... So long time watcher and only post when I need to to keep things light so I got an over heating issue with my motor set up here's what I got Old school goat crawler esc 55t pro novac 11/87 gears Stock hd ring and pinion gears Mip hd driveshafts Robinson center lockout Rebuilt trans Regrease trans Have pinion angles corrected at the diffs Stock weight on the whole rig (not even in the tires) Now my problem After about 1/2 an hour the motor is starting to get hot as in cook an egg on hot and loose power I've started at 21t gear and dropped from their at 2-3t intervals to get to my current tooth cout which allowed me to get a 1hr run in without loosing power but took a break to let the motor cool so my question is what am I missing or did I cook the motor and need a new one and as far as I have been checking the esc hasn't been over heated also have switched from a 65 turn to the 55 but had the same problem Thanks for your input |
Re: Motor overheating.... are you on the throttle a lot? or are you slow crawling? |
Re: Motor overheating.... Mix driving basicly drive to next rock pile oh missed something I have a 7.4 20c lipo |
Re: Motor overheating.... 1.9's? 2.2's? is it hot where your driving at? (ie are the rocks hotter than hell too? xD) |
Re: Motor overheating.... 1.9 rock beasts and at 90 deg the last time I ran which was an hour before cool down but 60-80 deg has been the norm |
Re: Motor overheating.... if your on the throttle a lot trying to get wheelspeed out of a 55t its gonna heat up the motor. if your rig isn't heavy (9+lbs) id suggest going to a 35t. 55t has lots of torque but no rpm hardly,so you may try going to a bit faster motor. 35t will still have plenty of torque and plenty of wheelspeed. a good mix of both imo. also check your gear mesh on pinion/spur gear..if its too tight it will cause motor to work harder. |
See how much weight us in your front tires. I know from experience. I had a lot of weight in my front tires and kept melting motors. |
Re: Motor overheating.... If you overheated the motor once, it has lost magnetic power and will continue to overheat. A rezapping will likely get your temps back in line, and bring your torque back too. If you are wanting more wheelspeed the 45t or 35t is a better choice. Gearing a motor up will cause more issues than a faster wind with lower gearing. |
Re: Motor overheating.... I'll check gear mesh when I get to my rig and a good guide is a piece of paper thru the teeth like old nitro style? Other thing with all the choices out their my friends got 27 turn motors and they seem a little quick in the technical stuff wouldn't a 35 turn not be that much slower I don't mind the loss of crawl for speed (Lost a race to a snail and a Prius laughed at me :-( ) but I do want some accuracy with trigger |
Re: Motor overheating.... Rezapping??? New term for me and how to do it? never did comps just had r/c around all my life... |
Re: Motor overheating.... Pull the brushes out of the motor. If they are bad they could be causing the heating issue as well as a worn com. |
Re: Motor overheating.... Lightly used motor communicator was pretty fresh when I cleaned the brushes when I put the 55 turn in plus took the sharp edges off my friend when brushless on his comp right after he got the 55 |
Re: Motor overheating.... a big difference in a 35t vs 27t stock can axial motor. |
Re: Motor overheating.... K so I got the idea on the 35t motor but what's going on with the rezapping of a motor kinda like to have the 55t as a back up? |

Re: Motor overheating.... K just changed out the motor last night to a 35t also had a binding behind the slipper clutch lock out and it was bent (????) I have a first gen ax10 converted to a scx10 so it never came with the clutching will run it tonight to see about the overheating I got to say thanks for the help |
