| the truth about servos...?
I realize there isn't truth involved as a lot of subjectivity is involved, as well as other factors. That being said here is the information... What is the real deal on steering servos? I see a lot of guys like these... 645mg, about $33ish, 133oz 5645mg, about $47ish, 168oz 7955TG, about $120ish, 333oz the above at 6 volts Traxxas 2075, about $40ish, 125ozs(no volts listed) Axial stock servo in RTR SCX10 kits is 120oz at 6v So the price range, setting aside used and the odd good deal on the net, is from $32 to $120. That is a big range. And does not include the the cheap chinese ones from Hobbyking, etc. A stock, or nearly stock scaler, 1.9(think usual SCX10 kits) can work fine with the 645mg? (leaving out the batt and BEC requirements) |

The 645 and the like are ok if you are just going for a casual stroll on the walking trails. If you plan on playing in the rocks where tires get wedged than 300+oz and titanium gears are the best bet.

There are other things to look for in servo other than cost and torque. The 645mg is an analog servo with a pretty slow speed (0.24 / 0.20). The slow speed makes the steering fee sluggish in comparison to a faster responding digital servo in the range of (0.15 / 0.12). You won't really understand the difference until you try one for yourself. The 645mg servo will work if you take it easy on it, but you probably be better off buying a better servo if you are really going to take your rig out crawling.

"You won't really understand the difference until you try one for yourself." Yea, I will for sure get a digital servo. I have seen the really fast one on the racers 1/8 buggies at the track. They respond so fast the wheels are just a blur. |

I was wondering this as well. I had 2 hobby people 220oz servos strip on my wroncho under very little stress. I believe the gears are soft Faust the servo motor was strong. Not to thread jack but I'm clueless to what servo would suite a wroncho? I rock race and crawl with it. |

I run the 645 and nothing else. I only scale and I don't run a BEC. Run 1.9 Swampers on a SCX. If I was running a big 2.2 or high speed I would want more. I've got 645's ten years old ,no kidding. Ran them in t-maxx's back in the day, no problem. I travel 2hrs. to meet up with my club and I just want things to work, the whole time, every time. I don't comp so I don't stress.

I've got a Hitec 646wp (133 in-oz) on a lightweight 1.55 wheeled rig and it's barely adequate. All my other rigs are well over 300 in-oz. I'd say a 5645 would be the absolute bare minimum to run on a 1.9 rig. I don't know how the guys that run a 645 can stand it. So very slow and weak. |

for trails the 645mg is just fine but if you want to crawl youll need a serious servo. im using the hs7945sh in my rig which is up at 403oz-in @ 7.2v i believe. it is steel geared ,with ballbearings and waterproofed aswel as heatsinked. |

A lot of the people who say a 645 work's fine probably haven't personally used a 300+ servo or just don't care. I went from a 945mg to a 7955tg on my scx10 and wouldn't go back. For the average user a 130in-oz work's fine but having the extra is always nice when you need it. Something cheaper like a savox 1256 is a pretty good servo also.

For trail rigs I'm happy with the Hitec 5645mg(just barely) but for any truck that will see any rock crawling or other extreme terrain I need 300+oz. I started out with 645's and have killed one (it took years of abuse!) and when I finally bought a 7955tg for my crawler I was hooked! Once you drive with a nice servo it's impossible (for me at least) to ever go back.

Hxt 10. 200 oz plus cost 8 bucks. I've only run this on 6 volts with great results. Its also rested to run on 7.4 http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...arehouse_.html Last edited by evan03; 05-28-2013 at 08:48 AM. |

Truth is you can go to the Left with them or you can go to the Right with them.
