| Decided to redo the mojave
After beating the hell out of my mojave on a trail run the other day, I decided to strip it down and redo it. This is before i beat the hell out of it I was hesitant to cut the bed floor out at first to clear the shock mounts, so the body set up higher than I preferred After cutting out the bed floor, the body is sitting like it should on the chassis, and I was able to use the original dingo bumper after trimming it down. But now I have this huge cut out in the bed floor that I need to cover, so I decided to build a camper for it. Ive been digging these utility campers. |

This time around I decided to weather the paint, so I used the salt trick that I haven't used since I was a kid building model cars. I applied a rust base color, and added salt to the wet paint where I wanted a rust and bubbled paint effect. |

After spraying the new blue over the salt, I rubbed the salt away to get a base for the rust effect. |

Did a few mix-mached parts, and started the weathering. I still have to distress the paint some more, and finish the camper, and a few smaller details. but this is where I am so far. Last edited by sideweeler; 06-11-2013 at 05:56 PM. |

Thanks guys! I haven't done any weathering in so many yrs, I was afraid I would be a little "rusty". When I was doing models as a kid, I used chalk to get this effect, but this time I tried something new (or at least new to me), it's made by Detail Master, and it's a lot finer than chalk, and it has a dry adhesive mixed in, and I also like to use washes. Here's some closer pics of the rust, so you can see the "bubbled paint" effect from the salt along with the powders. I also added some rust to the wheels last night. The powder needs a flat surface to adhere to (like the primers), so I don't know if it'll stay on the wheels, but I'll find out as soon as I take it through some water. Thanks everyone! I did a little more work to the camper, but I'm not sure how I like it, maybe it'll grow on me, or maybe I'll just ditch it. |
